Official Windows 11 USB installation drive is write-protected – cannot format or reuse

Hi everyone,

I purchased an official Windows 11 package that came with a USB installation drive and product key. I used the USB to install Windows 11 successfully.

After installation, I would like to reuse the USB drive as a normal storage USB, but I cannot format it because it shows as write-protected.

Here are the methods I have already tried:

Formatting through File Explorer

Formatting through Disk Management

Using Command Prompt with DiskPart (clean, format, attributes disk clear readonly)

Editing the Registry (StorageDevicePolicies / WriteProtect)

Unfortunately, none of these worked, and the USB is still write-protected.

My questions:

Is the official Windows 11 USB installation drive permanently write-protected by design?

  1. If not, what is the correct procedure to remove the write protection and format it for normal use?Hi everyone, I purchased an official Windows 11 package that came with a USB installation drive and product key. Hello !

I have had Windows 10 and 11 installation keys in the past (official USB keys, included in the box purchased in a store) and I was also unable to format them.It seems to me that they are protected directly at the hardware level: this way, the contents of the key cannot be altered.
Given the number of attempts you have made to format the USB key, I think this confirms that these keys are write-protected and that it is not possible to circumvent this.

Please let me know if you have any other question !

The official Windows 11 USB installation drive is not designed to be permanently write-protected. However, some USB drives may have physical switches that can enable write protection, or there may be software settings that prevent formatting. Since you've already tried several methods to remove the write protection, here are a few additional steps you can consider:

    1. Check for Physical Lock: If your USB drive has a physical switch, ensure it is set to the unlocked position.
    2. Use a Different Computer: Sometimes, the issue may be related to the specific computer or operating system. Try connecting the USB drive to a different computer and attempt to format it there.
    3. Third-Party Formatting Tools: Consider using third-party software designed for formatting USB drives. Tools like Rufus or HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool can sometimes bypass write protection issues.
    4. Check for Malware: Ensure that your USB drive is not infected with malware that could be causing the write protection issue. Run a full scan using an updated antivirus program.

If none of these methods work, it may be worth contacting the manufacturer or Microsoft support for further assistance, as they may have specific tools or procedures for addressing write protection on their installation drives.
