My newly purchased HP Envy Move 23.8" desktop will not automatically update from Windows Pro 24H2 to 25H2 (continually received a message to retry). I contacted Microsoft tech support who had remote control of my system. He was in the process of updating Windows to the latest version (released in February, 2026) when we lost contact. Now when I attempt to update Windows, the following information appears:

2026-02 Preview update (KB5077241) (26100.7922)

Install error - 0X800f0993

2 Queries:

  1. Why doesn't my operating system automatically update to the latest version of Windows?
  2. What does the information in bold type mean?

Thank you to anyone in the community who can enlighten me?

Depending on your current build number of Windows 11 24H2, you may be able to perform a quick upgrade to 25H2 using an enablement package.

Click your Start Button, type winver and hit Enter

Please provide a screenshot of the resulting dialog.

KB5077241 is an optional preview update, it is basically an early beta release of the March update.

The optional preview updates can be hard to install sometimes, may contain bugs and there is no need to install the optional preview updates.

If that update is continually failing, below that update is a switch to 'Get the latest updates as soon as they are released', disable that option and restart your PC, that will stop the optional update continually trying to install and wait for the full March update to be released.
