    Dear @Jahna Maria Harris,

Good day. Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!

I understand how concerning it can be to find that recent edits were not saved, especially when the document is important.

To help me narrow down the root cause and determine the best recovery options, could you please help confirm the following details:

    1. What type of document is this (e.g., Word, Excel, or PowerPoint), and where is it stored (OneDrive/SharePoint, or locally on your device)?
    2. Was AutoSave enabled at the time you were editing the document?
    3. Were you editing the document using your school account or your personal Microsoft account?
    4. Did the app or device crash, freeze, or lose internet during editing?
    5. Please take a screenshot of the issue you're experiencing so I can better assist you.

In the meantime, please try these steps below and check if it works:

1.Check if the changes exist in OneDrive/SharePoint directly

Even if Version History inside the app is not working, the file may still exist on the service.

If your file is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint in Microsoft 365, you can go back to a previous version of file. This is incredibly important if a mistake was made, you have issues with malware or a virus, or you just prefer a previous version. This is also important when you're collaborating with others and someone makes changes you didn't want in a file.

    • Go to OneDrive or SharePoint in a web browser
    • Locate the file > click ⋯ (More options) > Version history
    • Check whether newer versions appear there

Version history is created automatically for cloud‑stored files, even when AutoSave behaves unexpectedly.

2.Check Auto Recover and Unsaved Files

    • Open Word > File > Info > Manage Workbook > Recover Unsaved Workbooks.

    Untitled

3.Check OneDrive sync status on your device

If the document was stored in a synced folder, the edits may never have uploaded.

    • Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray / menu bar
    • Look for sync errors, paused sync, or “sync pending”
    • Resume sync if paused

Note: Please note that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I hope this helps! Your understanding and co-operation are highly appreciated. Thanks for your precious time. Have a nice day!

I look forward to your reply and will do my best to assist you further.

For recent edits to be recoverable and for Version History to work, the document must be stored in OneDrive or SharePoint and AutoSave/online saving must have been functioning correctly. If the file was local on the device or AutoSave was off, those edits may not have been uploaded and cannot be recovered through Version History.

Try the following paths, in order:

    1. Confirm where the file is stored
    • If the file is in OneDrive or SharePoint, Version History should be available.
    • If it is stored only locally on the iOS device (or in another app’s storage), Version History will not work because it relies on OneDrive/SharePoint.
    1. Use Version History from within Word (if the file is in OneDrive/SharePoint) On a supported platform (for example, opening the same document in Word on the web or desktop):
    2. Open the file.
    3. Go to File > Info.
    4. Select Version History.
    5. In the Version History pane, select earlier versions to preview.
    6. Choose the version that contains your edits and select Restore to make it the current version.

If Version History is not responding in iOS, try opening the same document in Word for the web or Word on a desktop device and repeat the steps above.

    1. Use the title bar Version History entry point (if available) If the document is in OneDrive or SharePoint and opened in a Microsoft 365 app that supports it:
    2. Open the file.
    3. Tap/click the file name in the title bar.
    4. Choose Version history.
    5. Open earlier versions in a separate window and select Restore on the version that has your edits.
    6. Check for older/unsaved changes views (mainly Excel) For Excel workbooks, there is an Unsaved Changes pane and Show Changes feature, plus File > Info > Version History for older versions. Word does not have the same Unsaved Changes pane, so recovery is primarily through Version History when the file is in OneDrive/SharePoint.
    7. If no versions show your latest edits If all available versions are older and do not contain your recent work, and the file was not stored in OneDrive/SharePoint or AutoSave was not uploading, there is no supported way in Microsoft 365 to reconstruct those missing edits.

    For future protection:

    • Always save important documents directly to OneDrive or SharePoint.
    • Ensure AutoSave is turned on when editing.
    • Use Version History regularly to confirm that new versions are being created while working.
