To reinstall Windows 10 Pro 64-bit using Microsoft’s cloud-based files (without relying on your current corrupted system files), use one of these approaches:
- Try Reset this PC with Cloud download (if Windows still boots)
- Open Settings → System → Recovery.
- Under Recovery options, select Reset this PC.
- Choose Keep my files (since personal files are already backed up, Remove everything is also an option if a completely clean system is preferred).
- When asked how to reinstall Windows, choose Cloud download.
- This downloads a fresh copy of the same edition, version, and build of Windows 10 that is currently installed.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the reset.
- This is a recovery operation and will remove installed apps. If Remove everything is chosen, user data on the internal drive is also deleted.
- Reinstall using Windows installation media (if Windows does not boot or Reset fails)
- On a working PC, create Windows 10 installation media (USB/DVD) using Microsoft’s tool.
- Boot the affected PC from this USB/DVD.
- On the first setup screen, choose language/keyboard, then select Install now.
- Choose either:
- Upgrade / in-place install (if available) to repair Windows while keeping files and apps, or
- Custom for a clean installation (this will erase the selected partition and install a fresh copy of Windows).
- Complete setup and then reinstall applications.
- If system files are corrupted but Windows still runs
Before a full reinstall, it is sometimes possible to repair system files:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt (Run as administrator).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- If corruption persists and the system remains unstable, proceed with Reset this PC (Cloud download) or a reinstall with installation media as above.
Because the registry and icons are “totally corrupted” and personal files are already backed up, using Reset this PC → Cloud download or a clean install from installation media is the most reliable way to return the system to a healthy state.
