A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Hi, James Robbins
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.
Sorry for this unwanted experience that you're facing. This usually happens for one of two reasons: either OneDrive is set to automatically back up your Pictures/Camera Roll, so it pulls in whatever apps save there, or you are seeing items that strangers shared with you, which can look like “new files” even though they are not actually stored in your OneDrive.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
Confirm where the files are coming from
Go to OneDrive on the web and check whether the items are inside My files > Pictures or only under Shared. If they are only in Shared, they are invitations/links from other people, not your own uploads, so they should not be treated like “your” photos.
If they are being pulled into Pictures, turn off that backup source
On your PC, open OneDrive Settings, go to Sync and backup, then Manage backup, and switch Pictures (and Camera Roll if shown) to Off. This works because it stops OneDrive from automatically syncing whatever random apps drop into those folders.
If the files are “corrupted”, roll back clean copies
From OneDrive on the web, right‑click a problem file and use Version history to restore an earlier version. If you have Microsoft 365, Files Restore can undo changes across files and folders for up to 30 days, which is helpful if many items were affected at once.
Rule out “unacceptable file” causes (formats, names, iCloud optimization)
Make sure the files are in supported photo formats, and rename anything with restricted characters (for example / \ < > : * " ?). On iPhone, iCloud “Optimize Storage” photos may fail upload until you turn that setting off, which prevents partial or placeholder files from syncing.
If the files look truly unsolicited, harden the account
Change your Microsoft account password and enable two‑step verification, this can invalidate access tokens that a third‑party app or service might be using to drop content into your storage.
Hope this helps. Feel free to get back if you need further assistance.
