A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Dear @David Robinson,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.
Based on your description, Microsoft Word is able to print successfully once, but subsequent print attempts fail until Word is closed and reopened (and sometimes only after rebooting the computer).
From my research and experience with similar cases, Microsoft Word itself does not have any built-in limitation that allows printing only once. When this behavior occurs, it is most commonly related to the Windows printing subsystem, rather than Word or the document itself.
In particular, the issue is usually caused by the Windows Print Spooler service becoming stuck after the first print job, or a problematic or outdated printer driver that does not properly release the print job after printing.
To help isolate and resolve the issue, I recommend the following steps:
1/ Restart the Print Spooler service
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter - Locate Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Restart
This often clears stuck print jobs and restores normal printing.
2/ Update or reinstall the printer driver
- Remove the printer from Settings > Printers & scanners
- Download and install the latest driver directly from the printer manufacturer’s website
Driver-related issues are a very common cause of this behavior.
3/ Test printing from another application
- Try printing a simple file from NotepadThis helps determine whether the issue is specific to Word or affects printing system-wide.
