Use Windows Update and the Surface/PC support tools rather than trying to update a separate “Windows Hello driver” manually. On supported devices, Windows Hello Face is handled by a combination of camera, system, and firmware drivers that are delivered through Windows Update and (for Surface) the Surface update channel.
Follow these steps on Windows 11:
- Make sure Windows Hello Face is set up
- Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Under Facial recognition (Windows Hello), confirm it is set up. If needed, select Set up or Improve recognition.
- If Windows Hello doesn’t recognize you reliably, re-run setup or use Improve recognition as described in the Windows Hello troubleshooting guidance.
- Install all Windows and driver updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install everything offered.
- If a View optional updates link appears, open it, go to Driver updates, select all available drivers, and choose Download and install.
- Restart the PC after all updates finish, even if not prompted.
- On Surface devices, use the Surface app to verify firmware/driver health
- Open the Surface app (install it from Microsoft Store if missing).
- Expand Help & support and check the update status.
- If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
- Recent Surface firmware updates explicitly include “Improves Hello facial recognition,” so keeping these current is the supported way to update the Hello-related components.
- If Windows Hello Face reports no compatible camera
- Confirm the device model actually supports Windows Hello Face (some models, such as Surface Laptop 13-inch 1st Edition and all Surface Laptop Go models, do not and require fingerprint/PIN instead).
- Ensure the device is fully updated as above; for supported models, camera and system drivers are delivered via Windows Update/Surface updates.
- To see driver versions (advanced)
- Press Windows key, type Device Manager, and press Enter.
- Expand Cameras, System devices, and Biometric devices (if present).
- Right-click the relevant camera or Surface system components, select Properties, then the Driver tab to view driver version and date.
- If an update is available via Windows Update, it will replace these versions automatically; manual replacement is not normally required or recommended.
If Windows Update does not offer newer drivers and Windows Hello is still not working correctly, the next step is to check the PC or camera manufacturer’s support page for updated Windows 11 drivers and install them following the manufacturer’s instructions.
