Hi bonnie neufeld,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand how disruptive and frustrating it can be to hear an unexpected “ding” sound and see a red line appear in your browser, especially when you’re just trying to work normally.
In most cases, this turns out to be a Windows feature that gets switched on by accident through a keyboard shortcut. When that happens, Windows highlights the active window with a red outline and plays a brief sound.
Could you try the following quick checks?
-Click on the browser window, then press Windows + Ctrl + T once. This toggles the “Always on top” feature off, and the red line should disappear right away.
-If you still notice anything odd, press Caps Lock + Esc to make sure the Windows Narrator (an accessibility feature) is turned off.
These steps won’t change any of your files or browser settings as they just turn off the visual/audio indicators.
If the sound keeps happening after that, let me know:
- Which browser you’re using (Edge, Chrome, etc.)
- Whether the red line appears around the whole browser window or inside a webpage
If anything doesn’t look right after that, just let me know and I’ll take another look with you.
