How to cancel Minecraft Education subscription if my email is not allowed into Admin Center?

I work for an ed tech company, and we were doing a partnership with Minecraft for Education. In order to understand the learner experience, I set up a Minecraft for Education subscription using my personal gmail account and a credit card. I no longer have need to access Minecraft for Education, but I continue to get charged for this subscription. When I tried to view my invoice via the Admin Center, I got a message that my gmail account did not have access to the Admin Center. I thought that perhaps my work email would have access, as we are a Microsoft 365 company, but my work email did not have access either.

I have separately logged into Minecraft for Education support to see if they can also help me with this issue.

My concern is that I possibly set up the account with my work (Microsoft 365) account, but the user email and invoice was my gmail. Here is the confirmation of my original purchase, which was in my company's name:

Note that I can't access these links with my work email either.

    Hi @Jacquie Moen,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I'd love to provide some clarification for your current situation.

According to Purchase Commercial Licenses – Minecraft Education and Purchasing Minecraft Education for Homeschooling & Family use – Minecraft Education, when Minecraft Education is purchased outside of a school (commercial / individual / homeschool purchase):

    • Microsoft does not attach the license to a consumer Microsoft account (in this case, it's your gmail account)
    • Instead, the purchase is made inside a Microsoft 365 organization (tenant) that is created as part of the purchase flow. For example, if you entered Doe as your domain name and John as your username, your user ID for Microsoft 365 Admin Center is John@Doe.onmicrosoft.com.
    • The Gmail address is used as a recovery/contact email, not as the sign‑in account itself

This behavior is explicitly described in Minecraft Education’s commercial purchasing and setup guidance, which states that buyers must create or use a Microsoft 365 Admin account and organization to purchase and manage licenses.

This also explains why your work account cannot access the Admin Center. It belongs to a different organization than the one you originally created for your Minecraft Education subscription.

With that in mind, there are two possible scenarios for you:

Scenario 1: You know your @onmicrosft account and still have access to the admin credentials for your tenant

You can find this @onmicrosoft.com account in your mailbox.

Once you're able to find your account and have access to Microsoft 365 Admin Center, you can cancel the license renewal by following this guide: Manage recurring billing in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

You can only change the recurring billing setting for an active subscription. If your subscription has already expired, you must reactivate it before you can turn recurring billing on or off. For more information, see Reactivate your subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

    • Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    • If you’re using the Simplified view, select Billing.
    • If you’re using the Dashboard view, go to the Billing > Your products page.
    • Select the subscription that you want to manage.
    • On the subscription details page, select Edit recurring billing.
    • In the Edit recurring billing pane, select On or Off, then select Save.

Scenario 2: You don't have access to your admin account:

In this case, the Microsoft Support Billing Team is the correct department to assist you with cancelling your subscription.

To ensure your issue is handled quickly and securely, I recommend contacting the Billing Team at your earliest convenience. You can find the appropriate phone number through the following link: Customer service phone numbers – Microsoft Support.

For security and privacy reasons, all billing-related investigations are handled exclusively by Microsoft’s dedicated Billing Support team. As moderators, we do not have access to billing systems, nor do we have the ability to initiate remote sessions. Our role is to guide users toward the correct support channels so you can receive the most accurate and secure assistance.

When you call, having a few pieces of information ready will help the team support you more efficiently. Please prepare:

    • The email address used for the purchase
    • Any payment confirmation details
    • Your username
    • Transaction information such as the last four digits of the card used, card type, cardholder name, and card expiration date

For your safety, please do not reply to this thread with any of your card information. The official support line is the only secure way to share these details.

I appreciate your patience while the Billing Team works with you to resolve this matter. I hope this clarifies the next steps and helps you stay informed about your current situation.

In the meantime, if my responses have been helpful, I kindly ask that you mark the post as an answer and vote it helpful using the account that originally created the question. Once marked, it will automatically be pinned to the top. This also helps other users who may encounter similar issues find the correct guidance more quickly.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding.

Because the subscription was created with a personal Gmail-based Microsoft account and not a work/school (Microsoft 365) tenant, cancellation and billing must be managed through the consumer account and the retailer that processed the payment, not through the Microsoft 365 admin center.

    Use these steps:

    1. Confirm who is billing the subscription
      • Check the credit card statement for each charge and identify whether the merchant is Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Google Play, or another retailer.
      • If the merchant is Amazon, Apple, Google Play, or another third party, Microsoft 365 admin center and standard Microsoft billing pages cannot cancel it.
    2. If the subscription was purchased through a third-party retailer
      • For Amazon, Best Buy, Google Play, Apple App Store, or other retailers, contact that retailer’s customer support and request cancellation and refund handling, as Microsoft cannot cancel or change recurring billing for subscriptions purchased through a third party.
      • Follow the retailer’s own subscription/refund process. For example, for Google Play or Apple App Store, use their refund/support flows as described in their help pages.
    3. If the subscription was purchased directly from Microsoft with the Gmail account
      • Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account that is associated with the Gmail address at the consumer account portal (not the Microsoft 365 admin center).
      • Go to the Services & subscriptions section for that personal account and locate the relevant subscription.
      • Turn off recurring billing and/or cancel the subscription from there. Cancellation will stop future charges; the account itself remains.
    4. If cancellation still is not possible
      • Verify again that the signed-in account is the same one that was used to purchase the subscription.
      • If the billing is through a third party, work only with that retailer’s support to resolve it.

Admin center access is only for work/school tenants and Partner Center scenarios (for example, when an education customer’s licenses are managed by a partner). A personal Gmail-based subscription is not managed there, so lack of access to the Microsoft 365 admin center is expected in this scenario.
