Unable to activate

I have a refurbished Win10 laptop which I left uncharged for over a year. When I recently turned it on, it crashed "unable to contact boot device" or similar. When it was fully charged, I went through all the automatic repair routines to no avail. Eventually, the machine offered a reset as a solution, which I did. It worked up to a point, but lost all my software, although it retained the small amount of data that had been loaded. I was able to replace all the missing software and get everything working, except that it refuses to activate Windows. I have tried all the methods Google was able to suggest, but none of them has worked - even the last resort "slui 4" refused to help. I don't understand what advantages activation offers, but I guess it must be a good idea, and I would really like to get rid of the nuisance "Activate" on-screen watermark. What can I do?

Activation is required to verify that Windows is genuine and not used on more devices than allowed. If Windows 10 on this refurbished laptop will not activate after the reset, the most likely causes are:

    • The device has no valid product key or digital license (common with some refurbished/pre-owned PCs).
    • The key that was originally used has already been used on more PCs than allowed.
    • A different edition or key was used previously than the one now installed.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Confirm Windows is up to date and eligible for troubleshooting
      • In the search box, type winver and open it to confirm you are running Windows 10, version 1607 or later.
      • Install all Windows Updates if needed.
    2. Run the Activation troubleshooter
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • If Windows is not activated, select Troubleshoot.
      • Follow the prompts. The troubleshooter can sometimes:
        • Detect a valid digital license and activate automatically.
        • Detect that the wrong edition is installed and offer to switch to the correct one.
    3. Check for common activation error codes
      • In Settings > Update & Security > Activation, note any error code shown.
      • Compare it with the list in Get help with Windows activation errors and follow the specific guidance for that code (for example, missing product key, wrong edition, or hardware-change-related errors).
    4. If this is a pre-owned/refurbished PC
      • It is possible the refurbisher or previous owner used a product key on more devices than allowed.
      • Ask the seller/refurbisher for the original Windows DVD and product key.
      • If they cannot provide a valid key, a new product key or copy of Windows is required.
    5. If no valid key or license is found
      • In Settings > Update & Security > Activation, use Change product key if a 25-character key is available (for example, on a label or in documentation).
      • If no key is available and the troubleshooter cannot activate, use Go to Microsoft Store from the Activation page to purchase a genuine digital license and activate.

Without a valid product key or digital license tied to this hardware, Windows will continue to show the activation watermark and some personalization features will remain limited. Removing the watermark and fully enabling all features requires resolving the license issue (either by obtaining the original valid key from the seller or purchasing a new license).
