Word will not hide Heading styles 4-10

I have edited styles many times - but right now I cannot get the styles to stop showing Headings 4-10 which I am not using. I have tried removing them from the gallery and using both Hide until used and Always hide - to no avail.

What's going on?

There is an option to prevent the lower level heading styles to display automatically when you use a higher level one. If you want to try it, do the following: In the Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S), click Options. In the Style Pane Options dialog box, clear the option "Show next heading when previous level is used." Confirm with OK. See the screen shot below.

Generally, controlling which styles are displayed or hidden in Word is a bit shaky, in my experience. It isn't as stable as one would like.

As usual, the AI bot got some things right.

Try opening Word in safe mode and creating a new document. What are you seeing in your Styles Gallery and Styles pane?

The default upon installation for the built-in heading styles is for levels 2-9 to appear after the one above has been used. Once they have been used, though, even in the template, they display. I suspect that you may have saved custom formatting for them in your Normal template.

If they are behaving properly when you start Word in safe mode, try renaming your Normal.dotm file to something like Normal2606.dotm or NormalOld.dotm, with Word closed. When you restart Word what is happening with them?

If renaming Normal.dotm helps, write back and we can help you get other customizations stored in your Normal template back.

    Hi @MITCHELL, DONNA,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us. I appreciate the time you took to provide those details. I understand that it can be a bit unexpected when Microsoft Word continues to show Heading styles (such as Heading 4-10) even after you’ve tried hiding or removing them.

I’m glad to help clarify why this happens and how you can manage it more effectively.

Microsoft Word uses built‑in heading styles that cannot be fully deleted; attempting to remove one simply resets it to its default state, and these styles may still reappear because they are part of how Word structures and formats documents.

In addition, Word may continue to display these styles when the Styles Pane is set to filters like All Styles or In Use, and the application can treat a style as “in use” if it was applied at any point which can cause deeper heading levels or TOC‑related styles to appear again under certain conditions.

Your feedback is truly appreciated, and your observations offer valuable insight into a real usability consideration that others may encounter when working with Word’s built‑in styles. As a forum moderator, I hope you understand that I don’t have the ability to modify or escalate product issues directly. However, I strongly recommend submitting your feedback through the Word · Community. This is the most effective way to ensure your voice reaches the product team and can be considered for future improvements.
