    Hi arkitek2s,

The most common cause is that the default PDF handler or previewer isn’t properly registered in Windows Explorer. I recommend first checking that you have a PDF application installed (such as Microsoft Edge or Adobe Acrobat Reader) and that it is set as the default app for opening PDFs. Next, confirm that the “Preview Pane” in File Explorer is enabled and that the preview handler is active under Options > View. If you’re using Adobe Reader, make sure the “Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer” option is turned on during installation.

If the issue persists, reinstalling or repairing the PDF application often restores the preview functionality. Since you mentioned deleting updates earlier, it’s also worth running Windows Update again to ensure no system components are missing.

You can try the above suggestions and let me know the outcome. If this answer helps clarify the situation, I’d appreciate it if you could click “Accept Answer” so others with the same issue can find the solution.

    Jason.

On Windows 11 Pro there are several different “PDF preview” scenarios. Use the steps below that match where the preview is failing.

    1. If PDFs won’t preview in Outlook This specific error is common in Outlook when opening PDF attachments:
    • In Outlook, check whether the error says: “This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it.”
    • If so, there are two main causes:

    a. Outlook and Adobe Acrobat Reader bitness mismatch
Outlook and Adobe Reader must both be 32-bit or both 64-bit.

    1. In Outlook: File → Office Account → About Outlook → note 32-bit or 64-bit.
    2. In Adobe Acrobat Reader: Help → About Adobe Acrobat Reader → note 32-bit or 64-bit.
    3. If they are different, uninstall the current Adobe Reader.
    4. Download and install the matching bitness from Adobe’s “Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions” page.
    5. Restart Outlook and test PDF preview again.

    b. PowerToys overriding PDF preview
If Microsoft PowerToys is installed, it can hijack the PDF preview handler.

    1. Open the PowerToys app from Start.
    2. Go to File Explorer Add-ons.
    3. Turn off “Enable PDF (.pdf) preview”.
    4. Close and reopen Outlook and test again.
    5. If PDFs won’t preview in File Explorer or Office preview panes
    • For Word/Excel/PowerPoint preview panes, there is a known limitation: if a document is already open in that app, the preview pane can show an error like “This file can’t be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Word previewer.”
    • The workaround is to preview the file in a different app or from Windows Explorer instead of inside the Office Open dialog, or close the running instance of the Office app and then try the preview again.
    1. If protected PDFs won’t open or preview If the PDFs are protected/classified (for example, from Microsoft Purview Information Protection):
    2. Make sure they are standard PDF files (not .pfile).
    3. Use Microsoft Edge (version 83.0.478.37 or later) and sign in with work or school credentials.
    4. Open the PDF and choose Open → Open in browser to view it directly in Edge.
    5. Alternatively, use a supported PDF reader such as the Microsoft Purview Information Protection plug‑in for Acrobat/Reader or Foxit Reader.

If the problem is specifically Outlook PDF attachment preview, focus on matching the bitness of Outlook and Adobe Reader and disabling the PowerToys PDF preview add‑on if installed.
