When a new Windows device is set up, it often requires a Microsoft account to complete the initial configuration. In most cases, creating that account does not automatically create a paid subscription. The key point is to confirm whether any subscription is actually attached to the new account before attempting cancellation.
Follow the steps below to safely review and, if necessary, cancel the extra Microsoft personal account.
Step-1
Sign in to the new Microsoft account Go to https://account.microsoft.com and sign in using the email address of the newly created personal account.
Step-2
Check for active subscriptions After signing in:
- Select Services and subscriptions.
- Review the list of subscriptions.
If you do not see Microsoft 365, Game Pass, or any paid product listed as Active, then there is nothing being billed. In that case, you can simply stop using the account. There will be no charges.
If you do see an active subscription:
- Select Manage next to the subscription.
- Choose Cancel subscription.
- Follow the prompts to confirm cancellation.
Ensure that the subscription status changes to Cancelled or Expires on a specific date.
Step-3
Remove payment methods To prevent any future charges:
- Go to Payment and billing.
- Select Payment options.
- Remove any saved credit card or payment method associated with the account.
Step-4
Close the Microsoft account completely If you do not intend to use the account at all, you can close it:
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/closeaccount.
- Sign in with the new account.
- Follow the account closure process and acknowledge the required statements.
Microsoft places the account in a 60 day closure period. During that time, you can reopen it by signing in again. After 60 days, it is permanently deleted.
Important clarification A Microsoft personal account created during Windows setup does not automatically generate billing. Charges only occur if you actively purchase a subscription or start a trial that converts to paid. Simply creating the account does not trigger payment.
If you are using a work account for Microsoft 365 through your organisation, that billing is completely separate and managed by your employer. Cancelling a personal account will not affect your work account.
This approach ensures there are no unexpected charges and that the extra account is either cleaned up or fully removed in a controlled way.
