To set up the Lenovo laptop with Windows, security, and the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, follow these phases.
- Install or set up Windows
- If Windows is already preinstalled, turn on the laptop and complete the Out of Box Experience (OOBE):
- Choose language, time, and keyboard: use the arrow keys to select options, then Tab to Next and press Enter.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi: use the arrow keys to select the network, enter the password, and press Enter.
- Enter a device name, then Tab to Next and press Enter.
- Choose setup type:
- For personal use: select Set up for personal use and continue.
- For work or school: select Set up for work or school and sign in with the organization account.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account (personal) or work/school account and create a PIN when prompted.
- Accept privacy settings, or adjust them, then Tab to Accept and press Enter.
- Skip optional items (phone linking, photo backup, Microsoft 365 trials, PC Game Pass) if not needed by tabbing to Skip or Skip for now and pressing Enter.
- If Windows must be installed from scratch:
- Create Windows installation media on a USB flash drive using a Windows 10 or 11 ISO on a technician PC. See:
- Boot the Lenovo from the USB, then:
- On the setup screen, use Tab to select language, time, and keyboard, then Next → Install now.
- Enter a product key if available, or choose “I don’t have a product key.”
- Select the Windows edition, accept license terms, and choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) for a clean install.
- Select the target partition and choose Next to start installation.
- After installation, complete OOBE as above.
- Secure Windows (baseline)
- During setup, choose stricter privacy options where desired.
- After reaching the desktop:
- Ensure Windows Update is fully run and all updates are installed.
- Use built-in security (Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Firewall) as the default baseline; these are enabled automatically on a fresh Windows install.
- Install Microsoft 365 and Copilot app
- Install Microsoft 365 desktop apps on the new laptop using the existing Microsoft 365 subscription (per the subscription’s portal and installer).
- Deploy or install the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows using one of the supported methods:
- As a Microsoft Store app using Microsoft Intune.
- Via software deployment tools such as Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Configuration Manager, Group Policy, or other management solutions, using the standalone .EXE installer.
- Automatically with Microsoft 365 Apps if the device has Microsoft 365 Apps Version 2511 or later and is on a supported update channel (Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel; not Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, and not in the EEA for automatic install).
- The standalone installer for the Microsoft 365 Copilot app can be obtained from:
- Download the Microsoft 365 Copilot app
- Microsoft Store
- Downloaded directly (standalone .EXE)
- (Optional) Pin Microsoft 365 Copilot
- After the Microsoft 365 Copilot app is installed, it can be pinned to the Windows taskbar using the appropriate policy, as described in the Copilot pinning guidance. Ensure the app is installed first; otherwise, the policy has no effect.
For accessibility, all Windows setup steps can be completed with a screen reader and keyboard only (Tab, arrow keys, Spacebar, and Enter) as described in the Windows setup guidance.
