upgraded Teams - now can't log in

Hello,

I need to upgrade Teams so I can join a meeting that is longer than 1 hour. When I upgraded, the system sent me to the business section. As 1 person, I paid, thinking that consultants do this. Now I can't sign in as I don't have a domain. The email associated with the account is [[Moderator note: personal info removed].onmicrosoft.com]

I just want to upgrade Teams - now I can't access it. Please help. I will cancel my subscription, but I can't even get in to do that.

    Dear @Linda Glenday,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

When you sign-up for business account, Microsoft automatically created a business tenant for you. That’s why your account now uses the address: *@.onmicrosoft.com.

In this case, could you please confirm these questions below to help me diagnose the issue more effectively:

    • May I please check whether you remember the password for the account (.onmicrosoft.com)? and could you sign-in this account?
    • Where you purchased the subscription (such as directly from Microsoft or through reseller)?
    • What is the exact name of your Microsoft 365/Microsoft Teams subscription?

Since cancel subscription and refund request things need action/approval from Billing team, so you have to raise the support ticket to Billing Team under correct/affected tenant. For that reason, the priority is that you have to get access back to your affected tenant.

Option 1: Contact Microsoft Data Protection Support by Phone

Since you are the only administrator and are locked out, the most direct method is to call Microsoft's support line to raise a request for resetting your authentication method. For a full list of regional numbers, you can also visit this official page: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support. The support team will assist you as soon as possible. For reference:  Get support | Microsoft Docs

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

In some countries, it is an automated conversation like: First, when you call the hotline, it will be asked as follows:

IVR: What kind of problem are you concerned about?

    You: Authenticator.

IVR: What kind of product do you use?

    You: Office 365 for business.

IVR confirmation: education or company account?

    You: For companies

    IVR: Are you an administrator?

    You: Yes.

IVR: Do you have the other administrator in your organization?

    You: No.

IVR: Do you need a... Service request?

    You: Yes

This process should connect you with a live agent who will create a service request with the Data Protection team. They will then contact you to help you regain access.

Option 2: Create a Temporary Account (Trial Tenant) to Submit a Support Ticket

If you have difficulty reaching an agent by phone, there is a reliable workaround. This involves creating a new, temporary Microsoft 365 account to contact the support team online.

    • Sign up for a new Microsoft 365 Business trial using this link: Compare All Microsoft 365 Plans. You will need to use a different, personal email address to register.
    • Once the trial account is created, log in to its Admin Center.
    • From the Admin Center, open a new Service Request. For reference:  Get support | Microsoft Docs
    • In the ticket description, explain that you are locked out of your primary tenant (your.onmicrosoft.com) and that you need to speak with the Data Protection team to regain access. Provide your locked account's details and a good contact number for them to reach you.

Important: Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your original account issue is resolved to avoid any future charges.

I am confident that the Data Protection team can resolve this for you. Please try the phone option first, as it is the most direct path. Let me know if you have any questions about these steps.

Note: Please understand that as a forum moderator, my role is to provide general guidance and troubleshooting support. I don’t have access to internal systems or backend tools to resolve backend/account issues, and I appreciate your understanding of these limits.

I hope the information shared helps point you in the right direction. Please try the steps above and let me know if they work. If not, we can continue working together to narrow this down.

The first response may not always resolve the issue right away, but with your help and more details, we can work toward a solution.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. I'm looking forward for your reply.

The account ending in onmicrosoft.com is a business/organization (work) account, so Teams treats it as a work/school tenant, not a personal consumer account. Joining longer meetings and managing that subscription must be done through that work account, not a personal Teams Free profile.

To restore access and get help with the subscription:

    1. Verify the account type and sign-in
      • Go to the Teams sign-in page or app and sign in using the full work account shown: ******@GlendayLeadership.onmicrosoft.com.
      • If Teams signs in with a personal Microsoft account instead (for example, the one used for Skype, OneDrive, or Outlook.com), switch to the work account:
        • In Teams, select the profile picture.
        • Add or switch to the work/school account so that Teams shows the work features (Teams, Assignments, etc.), not just Activity/Chat/Calendar.
      • If signed into the wrong account, follow the guidance in “Signed in to the wrong account in Microsoft Teams Free” and add the work account from within Teams.
    2. If sign-in still fails
      • For work/education tenants, sign-in issues can be related to the organization’s domain or Microsoft 365 configuration. Because this is a business tenant, support must be engaged from Microsoft’s side.
      • If locked out and there is no other admin, create a new temporary Microsoft 365 trial tenant (using a different account), go to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center in that trial, and open Help & Support to raise a support ticket.
      • In the ticket, request assistance from the Data Protection team to restore access to the original GlendayLeadership.onmicrosoft.com tenant and to help with subscription/cancellation.
    3. If Teams access was only needed for longer meetings
      • For personal use, Teams Free can be used with a personal Microsoft account. To use that instead of the business tenant, sign out of the work account in Teams and sign back in with a personal Microsoft account (the same one used for Skype, OneDrive, Outlook.com, or Xbox Live), or create a new Microsoft account.
      • When downloading Teams, both the free (personal) and work/school versions are available; choose the personal account if the business tenant is not required.
    4. Cancel or adjust the subscription
      • Because the subscription is tied to the business tenant and sign-in is currently blocked, cancellation must be done either by:
        • Regaining access to the admin account (step 2), then managing the subscription from the Microsoft 365 admin or account portal, or
        • Working with Microsoft support (via the trial-tenant support ticket or phone support) to cancel or adjust the subscription on the GlendayLeadership.onmicrosoft.com tenant.
