Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. What exact error message are you getting when you try to save?
    2. Are you using Excel from a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time purchase?
    3. Does this happen with both new files and existing files?

Try these targeted checks and fixes on the MacBook Air:

    1. Confirm basic save behavior
    • Create a brand‑new workbook in Excel.
    • Use File > Save As and choose a simple local folder (for example, Documents) on the Mac, not OneDrive/SharePoint.
    • Give it a short name (for example, Test.xlsx) to avoid path/filename issues.
    1. Verify permissions on the destination folder Even if the file shows Read/Write, Excel also needs folder permissions:
    • In Finder, right‑click the folder (for example, Documents) > Get Info.
    • In Sharing & Permissions, ensure the current macOS user has Read & Write.
    • If not, change it to Read & Write and try saving again.
    1. Check for disk space problems
    • Ensure the Mac has sufficient free disk space. If the disk is nearly full, Excel cannot complete the save and may show a generic failure.
    1. Test for third‑party add‑in interference Add‑ins can block the save process:
    • Close Excel.
    • Start Excel in Safe Mode equivalent (on Windows this is done with Ctrl; on Mac, disable add‑ins manually):
      • Open Excel, go to Tools > Excel Add-ins and disable any non‑Microsoft add‑ins.
    • Restart Excel and try saving again. If saving works after disabling add‑ins, leave the problematic add‑in turned off or update/remove it.
    1. Check antivirus or security tools If any third‑party antivirus or security software is installed on the Mac, it may be locking Excel’s temporary files during save:
    • Temporarily disable real‑time scanning.
    • Try saving the workbook locally again. If saving works, configure the antivirus to exclude Office/Excel working folders or update the product.
    1. Try an alternate location and name Because Excel saves via a temporary file, issues with the folder or path can block saving:
    • Save to a different local folder (for example, Desktop) with a new name.
    • Avoid very long paths or deeply nested folders.
    1. Check for file‑locking or sharing issues (if using OneDrive/SharePoint) If the file is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint and synced locally:
    • Make sure the OneDrive sync app is running and not paused.
    • Ensure the file is not locked for editing by another session.
    • If necessary, save a local copy with File > Save As to a non‑synced folder.

If none of these steps work for any workbook in any local folder, collect the exact error text shown by Excel and contact Microsoft Support, as the save process itself may be failing on the device.
