PC not recognizing second display and won't download and install recent update

On Sunday, my new PC completely froze and I had to do a hard reset. After reset I was given an error message saying that a download could not be installed and any subsequent attempts I have made to rectify the issue and get the update downloaded has failed.

Additionally, after the hard reset my PC no longer recognizes my second monitor and I have confirmed the monitor still works. I've used my primary monitor to confirm that all the displayport ports still work but I have no way of confirming if there is an issue with the HDMI output on the graphics card.

I've attempted to run a diagnostic on my PC but that was unsuccessful as well.

    Hi Someone,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

After a hard reset during system activity, Windows may not complete updates or driver loading correctly. When this happens, updates can fail and some hardware features, such as a second monitor, may not be detected until the system finishes repairing and updating itself.

In addition to Q&A Assist's answer, here are the possible troubleshooting steps that you can consider:

    1, Repair Windows Update

    • Select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot
    • Select Other troubleshooters
    • Run Windows Update troubleshooter
    • Restart the PC when finished

    2, Re‑check for updates

    • Select Start > Settings > Windows Update
    • Select Check for updates
    • Install all available updates and restart

    3, Reconnect the second monitor

    After updates complete:

    • Connect the second monitor to the HDMI port
    • Restart once more so Windows can detect and apply the display configuration

Follow these steps in order, since the freeze, failed update, and lost second display are likely related to graphics drivers or a partially failed update.

    1. Reset the graphics driver
    • Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B once.
    • The screen should blink and a beep may sound.
    • After a few seconds, check Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays to see if the second monitor is detected.
    1. Basic hardware checks for the second monitor
    • Confirm the second monitor is powered on and set to the correct input (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.).
    • Reseat the HDMI cable on both the PC and the monitor.
    • Try a different HDMI cable if available.
    • Since DisplayPort ports work, connect the second monitor via DisplayPort (or via a USB‑C/DP adapter) if the monitor supports it. This helps confirm if only the HDMI output is affected.
    1. Check multi‑monitor support and adapters
    • If using any splitter on HDMI or DisplayPort, remove it. A splitter can only duplicate a signal, not create a true second display.
    • If the PC has only one native video output and more than one external monitor is needed, use a dock or a USB‑C video adapter that provides an additional video output.
    1. Roll back the display driver (if issue started after an update)
    2. In the taskbar search box, type device manager and open Device Manager.
    3. Expand Display adapters.
    4. Right‑click the graphics adapter > Properties > Driver tab.
    5. Select Roll Back Driver if available and follow the prompts.
    6. Restart the PC and test the second monitor again.
    7. Reinstall the display driver If Roll Back is not available or does not help:
    8. Open Device Manager again and expand Display adapters.
    9. Right‑click the graphics adapter > Uninstall device.
    10. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then select Uninstall.
    11. Restart the PC when prompted.
    12. After restart, open Device Manager, right‑click the graphics adapter > Update driver.
    13. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and complete the installation.
    14. Test the second monitor.
    15. Handle the failed Windows update Because the freeze and failed update coincided with the display issue, ensure the system is stable after fixing the graphics driver, then:
    • Run Windows Update again from Settings > Windows Update and attempt to install pending updates.
    • If updates still fail and the display problem persists after the driver steps, use Feedback Hub to report the issue, including that the problem started after a freeze and failed update and that the second monitor is no longer detected. Use this link: Open the Feedback Hub.
    1. If the screen goes blank or unstable again If the PC shows a blank or frozen screen during these steps:
    • Force shutdown by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
    • Repeat 2–3 times until Windows Recovery Environment appears.
    • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press F5 to boot into Safe Mode with Networking.
    • In Safe Mode, repeat the Update/Roll Back/Reinstall graphics driver steps from above.

If all steps fail and the second display still is not recognized while the first works, the HDMI output on the graphics card may be damaged and hardware service may be required.
