SOLVED: Photos Legacy Software-- move movie projects to new computer and import

I purchased a new computer and downloaded the Photos Legacy app.

I went to my old computer and did a BACKUP of my video projects and created individual .VPB files. I've moved them to a folder on my new computer.

I opened the program on my new computer and clicked the IMPORT icon and choose import from a folder... after navigating to the folder it does not recognize or "see" the .VPB files.

I then created a new video project on my new computer.... added a few photos... and did a BACKUP to a .VPB file. I then tried to IMPORT the file (I just created) and the program does not recognize or "see" the .VPB files.

I have read through over 40 articles on Microsoft Community and found no help.

Please advise with any ideas.

PS: I did move all the main data folders from my old to new computer.

    Hi, This is Ramesh.

If the AI response doesn't help, here's another way to extract files from the .vpb archive.

Make a copy of your .vpb file.

Change the extension of the file to .zip

Now, you should be able to extract the contents of the .zip file to a folder. Zip and unzip files - Microsoft Support

Your files will be located inside the ProjectLibraryPhotoVideoItems subfolder.

Photos Legacy does not import .VPB project backups through the standard Import-from-folder flow. The .VPB files must be restored using the dedicated “Import backup” command in the Video Projects area, not the general Import button used for photos and videos.

Use this workflow on the new PC:

    1. Open Photos Legacy.
    2. Go to the Video Projects page (where video projects are listed, next to the New video project button).
    3. Select See more (the three dots menu) on that page.
    4. Choose Import backup.
    5. Browse to the folder where the .VPB files were copied from the old PC.
    6. Select the desired .VPB file and confirm.

This is the only supported way to open .VPB backups on another device. The general Import > From a folder option is only for importing media files (photos and videos), not project metadata backups.

If a project was backed up correctly on the old PC, and the .VPB file is intact on the new PC, using See more > Import backup on the Video Projects page will restore the project so it appears in the Video Projects list and can be edited normally.
