Trying to reset work laptop

Hi, I am trying to reset a work laptop. I am trying to reset it but when I get to the part where I need to add the network security key it says it’s invalid. The laptop only uses Wi-Fi and has no ethernet port. I know I typed in the security key correctly.

I tried to sign in with a different email, but it can’t setup a pin, and when I skip it it takes me back to the original sign in.

Help.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Ensure the Caps Lock key is turned off. Then, verify that the key is entered correctly using the password visibility icon. If you are having issues,

Try USB tethering and set up your laptop:

You can use a mobile device. Go to the Hotspot settings on your mobile and turn on USB tethering.

Then, plug a USB-C cable into the laptop’s USB port.

Once it’s connected, you should see the mobile data connection in the list of available networks.

    Click Connect.

If you are still having issues, on the "Let’s connect you to a network" screen, press Shift + F10 to open a Command Prompt window.

Run the command below and press Enter to set up your device locally.

    start ms-cxh:localonly

You can then set up your device with your Microsoft or work account.

Follow these steps in order, stopping when the issue is resolved:

    1. Confirm Wi‑Fi password and router
      • Verify the Wi‑Fi network name (SSID) and password directly on the router label or from whoever manages the work network.
      • Check for similar network names (for example, “OfficeWiFi” vs “OfficeWiFi-5G”) and be sure the correct one is selected.
      • Re‑enter the password carefully, paying attention to:
        • Upper/lowercase
        • Similar characters (O/0, l/1, etc.)
    2. Try connecting after Windows setup
      • If the reset is not yet complete and Windows setup is asking for Wi‑Fi:
        • If there is an option like “I don’t have internet” or “Skip for now,” choose it to finish setup offline.
        • After reaching the desktop, connect to Wi‑Fi from the taskbar and then sign in with the work account.
      • If setup forces a connection and will not accept the key, restart the device and try again, confirming the correct network.
    3. Check for network restrictions (work laptop)
      • Work laptops may be restricted to specific networks or require device registration.
      • If the Wi‑Fi is a home or guest network, the device may be blocked by company policy.
      • In that case, contact the organization’s help desk/IT so they can:
        • Confirm the correct Wi‑Fi and password
        • Check if the device is allowed on that network
        • Provide a temporary hotspot or alternative network if needed
    4. Use a mobile hotspot as a temporary workaround
      • If allowed by company policy, enable a hotspot on a phone and set a simple temporary password.
      • Connect the laptop to that hotspot during setup.
      • Once setup is complete and the work profile is loaded, switch to the normal work Wi‑Fi.
    5. If PIN setup fails and loops back to original sign‑in
      • This usually means the device cannot reach the account service reliably.
      • Ensure the laptop is actually online (Wi‑Fi icon shows connected and internet access).
      • If the PIN setup still fails, sign in using the work account password only (if offered), then set up the PIN later from:
        • Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign‑in options.
    6. If still stuck in a loop
      • Power off the laptop completely, wait 30 seconds, and power it back on.
      • Try the reset again, ensuring:
        • Correct Wi‑Fi network
        • Correct password
        • Stable signal (stay close to the router or hotspot)
      • If the loop persists, the organization’s IT must complete the reset or provide a pre‑configured image, especially since this is a work device.

Because this is a work laptop, final resolution may require the company’s IT department to ensure the device, account, and network are all compliant with their policies.
