BitLocker recovery keys are stored separately from the phone number used for Microsoft account security, but access to the account may be delayed while security info is being changed. During that waiting period, the BitLocker key cannot be viewed if the account is restricted.

To get the BitLocker recovery key, use only the supported locations where it might have been saved when BitLocker was first turned on:

    1. Microsoft account
      • From another device, go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
      • Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used when BitLocker was enabled.
      • Match the first 8 digits of the recovery key ID shown on the blue BitLocker screen with the list of keys in the portal and use the corresponding 48‑digit key.
    2. Work or school account (if the device was ever joined to an organization)
      • From another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey.
      • Sign in with the work or school account.
      • Select Devices, expand the device, then choose View BitLocker Keys and match the key ID.
    3. Other possible locations
      • A printed copy of the recovery key saved when BitLocker was turned on.
      • A USB flash drive where the key was saved as a text file.

If the Microsoft account is currently locked or under a 30‑day security‑info change period because of the phone number change, wait until that restriction ends, then sign in again at the recovery key page above.

If none of the locations listed in the BitLocker article contain the key, and the BitLocker prompt appears before Windows starts, the only remaining option is to reset the device using Windows recovery options, which will remove all files on the encrypted drive.
