To remove duplicate folders in File Explorer, first confirm whether the duplicates are:
- Local folders on the PC
- Synced/cloud folders (for example, OneDrive or connected mobile device folders)
Then use the appropriate method below.
1. Delete normal local duplicate folders
- Open File Explorer (Windows key + E).
- Browse to the location where the duplicate folders appear.
- For each duplicate folder that is not needed:
- Open it and confirm it does not contain any files that need to be kept.
- Move any needed files out to the correct folder.
- Right‑click the duplicate folder and select Delete, or select it and press Delete on the keyboard.
If a folder cannot be deleted because it contains files used by an app, close the app first, then try again.
2. Duplicate folders that come from OneDrive sync
If the duplicates are OneDrive folders (for example, you see them under the OneDrive node in File Explorer):
- To remove a folder only from the PC but keep it in OneDrive:
- Make sure the folder is inside the OneDrive folder in File Explorer.
- Turn on Files On‑Demand so the content stays in the cloud but not on the hard drive. See Files On-Demand (Windows) in the OneDrive article.
- Optionally use Choose which OneDrive folders to sync to your computer to hide whole folders from File Explorer while keeping them in OneDrive.
- To delete a folder from both OneDrive and the PC:
- In File Explorer, under OneDrive, locate the duplicate folder.
- Confirm it does not contain anything that needs to be kept.
- Delete it in File Explorer. This removes it from both the local drive and OneDrive.
For more control over which folders appear locally at all, use OneDrive sync settings to un‑sync folders. When a folder is un‑synced, it disappears from File Explorer but remains available in OneDrive on the web.
3. Duplicate folders from a connected mobile device
If the duplicates are from a phone shown in File Explorer:
- On the PC, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices.
- Turn off Show mobile device in File Explorer if the phone’s folders are not needed there.
- To remove only local copies of phone files (not the originals on the phone):
- In File Explorer, go to
C:\Users\<your username>\CrossDevice.
- Delete any duplicate or unneeded folders and files there. This does not affect the originals on the phone.
4. If a folder looks empty but won’t delete
Some apps (for example, Journal) store files in folders that may appear empty in the app but still contain files in the file system:
- Use the app’s Show In Explorer (or similar) option if available to open the folder in File Explorer.
- In File Explorer, check for hidden or non‑app files inside the folder and delete or move them.
- After the folder is truly empty, delete the folder in File Explorer.
