I just bought a new laptop and want to keep its Microsoft account separate from the family's subscription. I'm giving my old laptop to my kid. New laptop has the family subscription all set up. How do I remove the family sub. off new laptop while keeping the family subscription active for the other computers?

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

    Just to clarify first:

    1. What Microsoft account is currently signed in to Windows on the new laptop?
    2. When you open Word > File > Account, which account shows there?

The subscription is tied to the Microsoft account used to activate Office, not directly to the device. So once we confirm which account is signed in, we can remove or switch it cleanly without affecting the Family subscription on the other computers.

To keep the Microsoft 365 Family subscription active for the rest of the household but not use it on the new laptop, the subscription itself does not need to be cancelled—only the way it is shared and which account is signed in on each device needs to be adjusted.

    Use these steps:

    1. Stop using the family subscription on the new laptop
      • On the new laptop, sign out of Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, etc.):
        • Open any Office app → go to FileAccount → choose Sign out for the Microsoft account that has the Family subscription.
      • If that account is also added under Windows Settings → Accounts, remove it from Email & accounts or Access work or school so it is not used automatically.
      • Sign in to the Office apps on the new laptop with the separate/personal Microsoft account that should not be part of the Family subscription (or leave them signed out if not needed).
    2. (Optional) Stop sharing the Family subscription with the account used on the new laptop
      • From the subscription owner’s account, go to the Microsoft account services page and open the Sharing section.
      • In Other people, find the person/account representing the new laptop’s user and choose Stop sharing.
      • When sharing is stopped, that account loses Microsoft 365 Family benefits (extra OneDrive storage and desktop app usage) but the Family subscription itself stays active for everyone else.
      • Details for stopping sharing are described in the “Stop sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription” article.
    3. Keep the Family subscription active for the old laptop and other devices
      • The Microsoft 365 Family subscription can be shared with up to five other people.
      • As long as sharing is not stopped for those accounts, they keep all benefits on their devices, including the old laptop being given to the child.
      • If needed, the subscription owner can manage who is shared with and adjust members via the sharing dashboard.
    4. If the child should be managed via a family group
      • The Family subscription owner can keep the child in the Microsoft family group and continue sharing the subscription with that child’s account.
      • If someone is removed from the family group, they also lose access to shared digital purchases like Microsoft 365 Family.

This setup keeps the Microsoft 365 Family subscription running for the rest of the family while the new laptop uses a separate account that is not consuming a Family share.
