The generic “Azure subscription 1” is a standard pay-as-you-go style subscription and not an Azure for Students subscription. Verification for Azure for Students and attaching that offer to an account cannot be reset or changed manually by support on request; instead, the correct Azure for Students offer must be obtained and activated by meeting the eligibility requirements and signing up through the official offer flow.
Key points and next steps:
- Azure for Students is a separate offer
- Azure for Students provides a $100 credit for 12 months plus access to certain developer tools and more than 25 free services specifically for education, noncommercial research, and learning scenarios.
- It is limited to one Azure for Students subscription per eligible customer and is nontransferable.
- It requires that the user:
- Affirms being 18 or older and a full-time student at an accredited, degree‑granting two‑ or four‑year institution.
- Verifies academic status using the institution’s email address (for example, an
@njit.eduaddress).
- How to get an Azure for Students subscription
- If eligible, sign up directly for the Azure for Students offer using the institution email address via the Azure for Students offer page referenced in the documentation. This creates a dedicated Azure for Students subscription rather than a generic “Azure subscription 1.”
- If already at the end of 12 months and still a student, the Azure for Students offer can be renewed by signing up again for the offer as described in the FAQ.
- Behavior after credit or 12 months
- Azure for Students gives $100 in credit for 12 months. Charges during this period are deducted from that credit.
- After the credit is exhausted or 12 months pass, the Azure for Students subscription is canceled unless upgraded to pay‑as‑you‑go.
- If still a student at the end of 12 months, the offer can be renewed by signing up again.
- Visio and Education Software catalog
- Azure for Students includes access to certain Microsoft products (for example, Visual Studio, SQL Server, System Center, Visio Professional, and others) via the Azure Education Hub / Azure Dev Tools for Teaching.
- Access to these downloads is tied to having an active Azure for Students (or related Azure for Education) entitlement associated with the institution’s domain. Once the correct Azure for Students subscription is active under the
@njit.eduidentity, the Education Hub catalog should reflect the eligible products, including Visio Professional, where applicable.
- When to contact support
- If the account meets all eligibility requirements, has used the institution email, and still does not see the Azure for Students offer or the expected Education Hub catalog, a support request should be created using the Azure Education support channels referenced in the documentation (for example, the Microsoft support webpage for students) so that the Azure Education team can review the tenant and entitlement configuration.
The subscription name “Azure subscription 1” itself cannot simply be “converted” into Azure for Students, but an eligible NJIT student can sign up for Azure for Students with the NJIT email address and then use that subscription and its Education Hub benefits for Visio and other tools.
