Planner vs. Planner Premium Plan Limits

Hello,

I've been looking into Planner Plan limits.

This article for basic Planner only indicates Maximum plans owned by a group or user is 400.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/planner/planner-limits

My question is:

  1. If you delete a plan, does that account towards the 400 or does it free up space on this limit?
  2. What are the limits for Premium Plans in the New Planner?

    Hi @Amy M,

Thank you for your follow‑up question.

I’m happy to clarify how plan limits work in Planner Premium (the new Planner).

Microsoft does not publish any per‑user or per‑group “plan count” limit for Planner Premium. The familiar limit from basic Planner - “maximum 400 plans owned by a group or user”- does not apply in the Premium experience. Instead, Premium plans are governed by per‑project limits and Dataverse capacity, since Premium is built on the Project for the web engine.

Here’s what this means for you:

There is no documented limit on how many Premium plans a user or group can create or own. Your scalability isn’t restricted by a “400 plans” style cap.

Premium plans are constrained by project‑level limits, such as:

    • Up to 3,000 tasks per project
    • Up to 20 links per task, and 2,000 successor links per project
    • Up to 300 resources per project and 20 resources per task
    • Up to 10 custom fields per project

These are the currently published boundaries for Premium plans.

In addition, Premium data is stored in Dataverse, so the practical number of plans you can create is influenced by:

    • Dataverse database, file, and log capacity
    • API throughput limits
    • Environment‑level governance settings

Admins typically monitor and allocate these resources in the Power Platform Admin Center.

    Bottom line:

There is no “plan ownership limit” in Planner Premium. If you ever run into issues creating new plans, the cause is almost always environment capacity or Dataverse throttling, not a plan‑count ceiling.

    Hi @Amy M,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out with your questions about Planner plan limits. I understand you’re looking for clarity on how the 400‑plan limit works in basic Planner, whether deleting a plan frees up space within that limit, and what limits apply to Premium plans in the new Planner experience. I’m happy to share more details to help you plan and organize your work effectively.

1/ Does deleting a basic Planner plan free up space within the “400 plans owned by a group or user” limit?

According to Microsoft’s Planner limits documentation, basic Planner plans have a maximum of 400 plans that can be owned by a group or user. When a plan is deleted, it is no longer counted toward this total, so space is freed up within that 400‑plan capacity. This aligns with the confirmed behavior of Planner’s API, where deleting a plan removes it entirely rather than soft‑deleting it. If the plan belongs to a Microsoft 365 Group, deleting the plan removes only that plan; deleting the group removes all associated plans.

    Reference: Delete plannerPlan.

2/ What are the limits for Premium plans in the new Planner?

Premium plans in the new Planner are based on the capabilities previously known as Project for the web. Instead of a per‑user or per‑group plan count, Premium plans use project‑level limits. Published limits include:

    • Tasks per Premium plan: Up to 3,000 tasks
    • Dependencies: Up to 20 links per task or up to 2,000 successor links per project (based on documented project‑level constraints)
    • Custom fields: Up to 10 per project
    • Resource limits: Up to 300 resources per project and 20 resources per task

These Premium plan limits differ from basic Planner, which includes features such as up to 9,000 tasks per plan and 200 buckets for each plan. Premium plans introduce advanced capabilities like timelines (Gantt charts), dependencies, custom fields, People view, and other project‑management features that run on Dataverse to support more sophisticated planning needs.

Please let me know if you have any follow‑up questions or would like help deciding which Planner option best fits your scenario.

Your input is also valuable to others in the community, so your vote can help others quickly find the information they need.

    1. The “Maximum plans owned by a group or user = 400” limit applies to plans that currently exist. Deleting a plan removes it from the group/user’s ownership count and therefore frees capacity under this 400‑plan limit.
    2. For Premium plans in the new Planner (formerly Project for the web), the basic Planner limits article does not apply. Premium plans follow the “Premium plan limits for Project for the web,” which are referenced separately from the basic Planner limits. The basic vs. premium comparison specifies that:
      • Basic plans have a task limit of 9,000 per plan.
      • Premium plans have a different (lower) task limit per plan, documented under the Project for the web limits and boundaries for premium plans.

For full details of Premium plan limits (tasks, buckets, etc.), refer to the “Premium plan limits for Project for the web” documentation linked from the Planner basic vs. premium comparison.
