Office was previously activated on the PC before the motherboard replacement. After a major hardware change, Office may detect it as a different device and show messages such as “already used on another device” or that the maximum number of activations has been reached.

For one-time purchase versions (Office 2016/2019/2021/2024 Home & Business, Home & Student, Professional):

1. These licenses are normally limited to a single PC.
2. After a hardware change (like motherboard replacement), activation on the “new” device may fail with a message about reaching the maximum number of activations.
3. In this case, activation must be done by phone and the license must be transferred according to the Software License Terms.

Steps:

1. Start Word or Excel on the repaired PC and follow the activation prompts until the option to activate by telephone appears.
2. Use the phone activation system to reactivate Office on this PC.
3. Ensure Office is not used on any other PC with the same product key (the license is for one computer only).
4. If activation still fails, review the transfer terms in the Software License Terms from an Office app via:
   • File → Account → About [program name] → View the Microsoft Software License Terms.

If Office was originally installed using a product key and the message says “this product key has already been used,” that means the key has already been redeemed to a Microsoft account. In that case, reinstalling or managing Office must be done from that same Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page.
