My phone is connected and my computer can’t connect connect to the WiFi but not the internet. I’ve done a network reset twice. I live in a dorm so I can’t do anything with the router and I don’t have an Ethernet cable.

    Hi Aislynn Lowe,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that your Windows 11 PC can connect to the dorm Wi‑Fi network but shows no Internet access, while your phone works on the same network, and you are unable to access the router or use Ethernet.

Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following.

To help narrow this down, could you please confirm:

1, When connected, does the network icon show Connected, no Internet (globe icon), or does it show connected normally but websites fail to load?

2, Does your dorm network require a sign‑in or acceptance page in a web browser (captive portal) when new devices connect?

In the meantime, you can try these steps:

1, Check date and time synchronization

    • Open Settings
    • Go to Time & language and select Date & time
    • Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically
    • Select Sync now

2, Temporarily disable IPv6 on the Wi‑Fi adapter

    • Open Control Panel
    • Go to Network and Internet and select Network and Sharing Center
    • Select Change adapter settings
    • Right‑click your Wi‑Fi adapter and select Properties
    • Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and select OK
    • Disconnect and reconnect to the Wi‑Fi network

3, Verify the network profile is not restricted

    • Open Settings
    • Go to Network & Internet and select Wi‑Fi
    • Select your connected dorm network
    • Make sure Network profile type is set to Public (or Private if required by dorm IT)

4, Temporarily disable third‑party VPN or security software (if installed)

    • Turn off any VPN apps or third‑party firewall/security tools
    • Restart the PC and test the connection again

5, Open a browser and force the dorm sign‑in page

    • Open Microsoft Edge
    • In the address bar, type a non‑HTTPS address such as http://neverssl.com
    • Check if a dorm network sign‑in or access approval page appears

    6, Test with a clean Wi‑Fi reconnect

    • Turn on Airplane mode for 30 seconds
    • Turn Airplane mode off
    • Reconnect to the dorm Wi‑Fi and test Internet access

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

    1

    Reinstall the Network drivers:

    1. Open the Device Manager.
    2. Expand the arrow next to Network adapters.
    3. Right-click your default Wi-Fi driver (Intel or Realtek), select Uninstall device > Select 'Attempt to remove the driver software for this device' check box, and click Uninstall.
    4. Once uninstalled, restart your computer.

(Windows will automatically reinstall the network driver for your computer during this restart).

After the restart, reconnect your PC to the Wi-Fi network. See if this works.

    2

Forgot your Wi-Fi network and Reconnect to it.

Go to Start > Settings > Network & Internet> Select "Manage Network", click your Wi-Fi network, and click Forgot.

Reconnect to your Mobile Wi-Fi network again.

    3

If you are still having issues, please try running the network repair command lines suggested by Q&A Assist.

Let me know if you still need more help.

Follow these steps on the Windows 11 PC to troubleshoot “connected to Wi‑Fi, but no Internet” when the phone works:

    1. Turn Wi‑Fi off and back on
      • Select the Network icon on the taskbar.
      • Turn Wi‑Fi off, wait 10–15 seconds, then turn it back on and reconnect to the dorm network.
    2. Run the Network troubleshooter
      • Select Start > Settings > Network & Internet.
      • Select Status.
      • Scroll down and select Network troubleshooter.
      • Follow the on‑screen steps and apply any fixes it suggests.
    3. Run network repair commands
      • Select Search on the taskbar, type Command Prompt.
      • Right‑click Command Prompt > Run as administrator > Yes.
      • Run these commands in order, pressing Enter after each:
             netsh winsock reset
             netsh int ip reset
             ipconfig /release
             ipconfig /renew
             ipconfig /flushdns

      • Restart the PC and test the connection.
    4. Renew IP and flush DNS only (alternative quick check)
      • If step 3 seems too long, at least run as admin:
             ipconfig /release
             ipconfig /renew
             ipconfig /flushdns

      • Then test again.
    5. Check for proxy settings
      • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy.
      • Turn off any Manual proxy setup options.
      • If there is an automatic configuration script set by the dorm, leave it as is; otherwise, turn it off and test.
    6. Check the IP address
      • In Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi, select the dorm network > Properties.
      • If the IPv4 address looks like 169.254.x.x, Windows is not getting an address from the dorm network.
        • In that case, contact dorm IT or housing tech support and report that the PC cannot obtain an IP address while other devices (phone) work.
    7. Try another network (if possible)
      • Connect the PC to a different trusted Wi‑Fi (for example, a mobile hotspot from the phone).
      • If Internet works there, the issue is likely with the dorm network configuration for that device (MAC filtering, registration portal, etc.), and dorm IT needs to register or unblock the PC.

If none of the above works, provide dorm IT with details: that the phone works on the same Wi‑Fi, the PC shows “No Internet,” and that IP renew/flush and Network troubleshooter have already been tried. They may need to authorize the device or adjust network settings on their side.
