If you sign in with your Microsoft account on the Services & Subscriptions page, do you see your Office license listed as active?

Follow these steps to get Office activated and stop the “contact Microsoft” / activation prompts.

1. Confirm how Office was obtained
   • Pre‑installed on a new Windows PC (no printed key, or a 25‑digit key on a card from the PC maker).
   • Retail product key card / online purchase (25‑digit key from a store or online).
   • Workplace Discount Program (through employer).
2. If Office came pre‑installed on a new Windows device
   1. Open any Office app (Word, Excel).
   2. When prompted, sign in with a Microsoft account, not a product key.
      • Use the same Microsoft account that will own the license.
   3. If a screen appears saying Microsoft 365 is installed as a one‑year subscription or one‑time purchase, sign in there; the digital product key is automatically applied and the product is added to the Microsoft account.
   4. If you see a yellow/red banner like “Most of the features have been disabled because it hasn’t been activated”, you must either:
      • Start a Microsoft 365 Family trial, or
      • Buy Microsoft 365, or
      • Sign in with a Microsoft account that already has an active Microsoft 365/Office license.
3. If there is a brand‑new product key (card or email)
   1. Go to Office.com/setup or https://microsoft365.com/setup.
   2. Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own Office.
   3. Enter the 25‑digit product key and follow the prompts.
      • This is a one‑time process that permanently links the key to that Microsoft account.
   4. After redeeming, install Office from that account if needed.
4. If Office says the key is already used / only asks to sign in
   • Once a key has been redeemed, activation is done by signing in, not by entering the key again.
   • Go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page and confirm that the Office or Microsoft 365 product appears under that Microsoft account.
   • On the PC, open Word → File → Account → Sign out of all accounts, then Sign in with the same Microsoft account that shows the license.
5. If Office was bought through the Microsoft Workplace Discount Program
   • On the activation screen, choose “I don't want to sign in or create an account” and enter the product key from the Workplace Discount Program.
6. If activation still fails or says to contact Microsoft
   • Make sure the subscription is valid and includes desktop apps:
     • Microsoft 365 Basic does not include installable Office apps; it only provides OneDrive storage and web apps.
     • Microsoft 365 Personal or Family (or perpetual Office 2021/2019, etc.) are required for desktop apps.
   • If the account only has Microsoft 365 Basic, use the web apps at https://www.microsoft365.com/apps or upgrade to a plan that includes desktop apps.
7. If the wrong edition or version is installed
   • If the installed Office edition does not match the license (for example, a different year or volume edition), run the Microsoft 365 Uninstall troubleshooter (aka.ms/SaRA-OfficeUninstall-sarahome) to remove Office.
   • Restart the device, then reinstall the correct version from the Microsoft account that owns the license.

If after these steps the activation status still shows “We’re still trying to activate Office” for several days, verify Windows date/time and time‑zone settings are correct, then repeat sign‑out/sign‑in in Word → File → Account.
