Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Are you able to see your Microsoft 365 Family subscription under the Services & subscriptions page here: https://account.microsoft.com/services

Please make sure you’re signed in with the same Microsoft account that the Family subscription was shared to.

If you can see the subscription there and it shows as active, please follow the steps below.

Before installing, it’s a good idea to uninstall all existing versions of Office to avoid conflicts.

    Here’s how:

    • Open the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Look for any version of Microsoft Office or Office apps, right-click, then choose Uninstall. Please uninstall all Office apps.
    • Once that’s done, restart your computer just to be safe.

    Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services again
    • Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to MS365 Family subscription.
    • Find Microsoft 365 Family subscription and click the "Install".
    • That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

If anything’s unclear or the "Install" option still doesn’t show, feel free to let me know. I’ll be happy to walk you through it!

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

The most common causes are either that the subscription is not actually active, or the Office apps are signed in with the wrong account/license.

Use these steps to fix it:

    1. Confirm the family subscription is active
      1. Close all Office apps on the laptop.
      2. Go to the Subscriptions page.
      3. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the Microsoft 365 Family subscription (your wife’s account).
      4. Under Microsoft 365, check that it shows as active (not expired or cancelled). If it shows expired or suspended, it must be renewed. See How to renew your Microsoft 365 subscription.
    2. Make sure the correct account is used in the Office apps
      1. On the laptop, open Word (or Excel).
      2. Go to File → Account.
      3. Under User Information, verify which email address is signed in.
      4. If it is not the account that received the Family sharing invitation (your own Microsoft account), sign out there.
      5. Sign back in with the Microsoft account that was added to the Family subscription and accepted the invitation.
      6. In the same Account page, look for Update license or similar and trigger it so the app refreshes the subscription status.
    3. If the subscription is active but renewal messages continue
      1. Double‑check online that the subscription really shows as active and not expired.
      2. Ensure that the account shown as licensed online is the same one signed into Word/Excel on the laptop.
      3. If the subscription is confirmed active and the correct account is signed in, but Office still says “renew” or “subscription canceled,” contact Microsoft Support so they can check the license on the back end. See A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application and Problems renewing a Microsoft 365 subscription.

If the subscription owner’s payment method failed (expired card, etc.), the Family subscription can show in accounts but be expired or suspended; in that case the owner must fix payment and renew before shared members can use the apps again.
