A video editing tool developed by Microsoft, designed to make video creation easy and accessible for everyone.
Clipchamp is designed as a lightweight, browser-based video editor that is tightly integrated with Microsoft 365, which explains several of the behaviors being experienced.
- Performance and stability
- Clipchamp runs in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome and relies heavily on the local machine’s CPU, GPU, RAM, and disk.
- For smooth performance, the device should have at least 8 GB RAM (16 GB recommended), a recent graphics card, and be 64-bit with a 64-bit browser.
- There must be more free disk space on the internal drive than the total size of the media files in the project, because Clipchamp uses local temporary files during editing and export.
- If performance is poor (lag, freezing, crashing), recommended actions include:
- Update Edge/Chrome to the latest version.
- Clear the browser cache (select “All time” and “Cached images and files”), then restart the browser using
edge://restartorchrome://restart. - Close other tabs and apps so more CPU/GPU and memory are available.
- Use smaller or fewer input files (for example, compress 4K clips to 1080p if 4K export is not needed).
- Check for corrupted media files and, if needed, convert them with a separate converter before importing.
- Feature scope and “simple editor” design
- Clipchamp is positioned as an accessible editor for importing, trimming, and joining clips on a timeline, adding transitions, text, annotations, overlays, and music.
- It focuses on common scenarios (screen/webcam recording, simple edits, basic titles and transitions, stock audio) rather than advanced, multi-layer, pro-level effects or detailed audio engineering.
- For 4K workflows, Clipchamp supports editing and 4K export, but large 4K files can impact performance; guidance is to compress to 1080p when 4K output is not required.
- Workflow and timeline behavior
- The interface is intentionally simplified: timeline editing, drag-and-drop titles, transitions, and stock audio are designed for quick assembly rather than complex multi-track post-production.
- Text, transitions, and audio are added via dedicated tabs (Text, Transitions, Content library) and dragged onto the timeline, then adjusted via the property panel (text content, color, position, fades, filters, etc.).
- This model can feel restrictive compared to full professional NLEs, but it aligns with the goal of making basic editing approachable in a browser.
- Integration with Microsoft 365, OneDrive, and SharePoint
- For work and school accounts, Clipchamp is deeply integrated with Microsoft 365: videos and project assets are stored in OneDrive and SharePoint, just like documents and other files.
- Video playback and management are built on the same SharePoint platform used by other Microsoft 365 content, enabling standard governance features (permissions, retention, eDiscovery, legal hold) and familiar sharing/searching experiences.
- Editing projects store their media in an Assets folder in OneDrive/SharePoint; moving or deleting that folder or its contents can cause “locate your files” prompts and break the workflow.
- Clipchamp is also integrated with Microsoft Stream for sharing finished videos and with existing videos already stored in OneDrive/SharePoint.
- Freemium model and “premium” prompts
- Clipchamp is available in different plan levels. Clipchamp Standard is included with several Microsoft 365 and Office 365 business and enterprise subscriptions, and there is also a premium add-on and standalone subscriptions.
- Premium capabilities include access to additional stock content, templates, and other advanced features. In environments where only the standard or free tier is enabled, prompts about premium features will appear when trying to use those assets or options.
- Practical steps to reduce friction
- Ensure the device meets the hardware requirements (especially RAM, GPU, and disk space).
- Keep Edge/Chrome fully updated and clear cache if media loading or playback is unreliable.
- Avoid moving or deleting the project’s Assets folder in OneDrive/SharePoint.
- Use compressed or lower-resolution media when 4K is not required to improve responsiveness.
- If browser extensions (privacy/ad blockers) are installed, whitelist Clipchamp’s URL (for personal accounts) or the organization’s SharePoint/OneDrive URL (for work/school accounts), or temporarily disable extensions and retest.
These constraints and design choices are what make Clipchamp feel limited or frustrating in more advanced scenarios, but they are consistent with its role as a browser-based, Microsoft 365-integrated editor optimized for common business and education video tasks rather than full professional post-production.
