My father got a Bitlocker message on his laptop and we are trying to get into his Microsoft account to retrieve the recovery key, We get a code thru email but due to 2 step verification, keep getting message not available.

Is there another way to do 2 step vertification?

    Hi Anne Arroyo,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A!

I completely understand the frustration when BitLocker is blocking access and the account sign‑in keeps failing. I know you're trying to get pass 2-step verification, so to not waste your time, I’ll be direct:

No one can bypass or disable two‑step verification on your behalf. In addition, Microsoft cannot provide or revoke a BitLocker recovery key if you cannot sign in.

There are other ways to do 2-step verification, but only if they were set up before the lockout. There should be an option on-screen for you to choose from if they're available for your account. So if you haven't set up and / or none of these appear as selectable options, you cannot use it:

    1. Microsoft Authenticator app (approval or code)
    2. SMS or voice call to a registered phone number
    3. Code sent to a secondary email address
    4. A saved recovery code (25‑character code)

2FA and BitLocker are serious security features designed to protect your data. If their encryption could be bypassed, it would mean the protections were ineffective. Basically, if you were able to request code outside of the intended process, then anyone could do the same, including hackers or scammers.

The "not available" message usually means that registered verification method is temporarily unavailable, blocked, or rate‑limited on Microsoft’s side. Consider trying to request on a different network (Wi-Fi for mobile data), as well as waiting and trying again later after a few hours.

I hope you father can get back on his PC soon!

Because two-step verification is enabled and the current methods are failing, the only supported options are:

    1. Try all existing security methods again
      • On the Microsoft account sign-in page, enter the account email and password.
      • When prompted to verify, try each listed method (alternate email, phone, Authenticator) and make sure:
        • The email/phone shown (masked) is correct.
        • The email junk folder is checked for codes from @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
        • The phone can receive SMS from unknown numbers and is not full.
      • Avoid repeated code requests in a short time, as excessive requests can cause temporary blocking of verification codes.
    2. If some security info still works
      • If at least one method (for example, a backup email) works, sign in and go to Advanced security options for the Microsoft account.
      • Select Add a new way to sign in or verify, add a new phone or email, confirm it with a code, then use it as the new verification method.
      • After that, the BitLocker recovery key can be retrieved from the account if it was backed up there.
    3. If all security info is inaccessible
      • If no listed phone/email/Auth app can be used, select I don't have any of these at the "Verify your identity" prompt.
      • Follow the instructions to replace the security info. Once replaced, there is a mandatory 30‑day waiting period before normal sign-in is allowed. During this period, access to items like BitLocker keys stored in the account is not available.
    4. If the password is also not known
      • If the account password is forgotten and none of the security info works, use the Microsoft account recovery form. Guidance and the form are provided in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form. This requires another working email address to receive responses.
      • If two-step verification is on and none of the alternate methods are available, support agents cannot bypass or reset it, and cannot send password reset links or change account details.
    5. If verification codes are not arriving
      • Check that the correct mailbox is used and that the address is actually listed as security info.
      • Ensure the phone number is a mobile number (not VOIP) and entered correctly.
      • If there are repeated failures or a message that codes are not available, it may be a temporary block due to unusual activity or too many requests; in that case, waiting and trying again later or using a different method (alternate email) is required.

If none of the above methods work and two-step verification is enabled with no usable security info, there is no alternate way to complete two-step verification or access the BitLocker key through Microsoft support.
