I started the setup process to my new surfacePro 11 and during the process i was interrupted, upon returning to the point where I left off the screen defaulted back to sign in with password, I did not establish a password or pin and it is asking for one, stuck in a loop and cannot get past this point

    Hi eduard,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

I’m sorry to hear you were interrupted during the first‑time setup and are now stuck in a sign‑in loop. This likely happened because Windows incorrectly assumes that an account was already finalized.

To better help you, there are a few details I’d like to ask: Are you using a Microsoft account for setup or local? Is there any account credential shown onscreen? Based on that, here’s what to try:

1 - If you’re using Microsoft account to sign in:

    • Try your account password > confirm by signing into account.microsoft.com
    • If you can sign in on web but fails on Windows, try Safe Mode to complete
    • On the sign‑in screen, hold Shift + click Restart (Power button bottom‑right)
      • Keep holding Shift until you reach Windows Recovery
      • If it doesn’t work, force shutdown your Surface a few times.
    • Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings
    • Click Restart > press 5/F5 to boot into Safe Mode with Networking
    • Try signing with the Microsoft account you intended to use during setup.
    • If Safe Mode allows you to sign in, the loop is resolved and no reset is needed.

2 - If that doesn’t work / Microsoft account is not established

    • The Surface setup state is corrupted and, unfortunately, must be reset.
    • Get into WinRE as instructed above > Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    • Choose Remove everything (best option for a brand‑new device)
    • Select Cloud download if available > follow the instructions.

If reset fails or loops again, you need to reinstall Windows using a Surface recovery image from another PC. This completely reset the device and guarantees a clean first‑time setup. Check out: Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface - Microsoft Support

Note that the steps above will delete all your data. Since you mentioned that this is in the setup process, I believe there shouldn’t be anything saved on your PC. But in case that there is, this will clear everything on the drive.

Use the account sign-in options on the Surface to get past the loop and complete setup.

    1. On the Surface sign-in screen, look for other sign-in methods under the password box:
      • If a PIN option is shown, select it and try signing in with the PIN created during setup.
      • If Windows Hello (face or fingerprint) was set up, use that instead of a password.
      • If a Microsoft account was used earlier in setup, enter that account’s password (the same one used on other devices or on the web).
    2. If none of these work or no password/PIN was ever created, restart and try Safe Mode sign-in with a password:
      • Select Power > Restart on the sign-in screen.
      • When the sign-in screen appears again, hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
      • Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
      • Press 5 (Safe Mode with Networking) and sign in using the Microsoft account password if prompted.
    3. Once signed in, adjust or create sign-in options so the device no longer loops on a missing password/PIN:
      • Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
      • On Windows 11, under Ways to sign-in, set up PIN (Windows Hello) or another method (Picture password, Security key) and follow the on-screen instructions.
      • If needed, also configure when Windows should require sign-in again under Additional settings.
    4. If sign-in still fails (for example, the Microsoft account password is not accepted), use the account recovery options from another device to reset the Microsoft account password, then return to the Surface and sign in with the new password.

If the device continues to block sign-in even after password reset and Safe Mode attempts, follow the guidance in the Windows sign-in troubleshooting article to work through specific sign-in problems or error messages.
