I have a microsoft 365 account that i opened in 2022. I had a motherboard failure and had to purchase a new laptop. I had a hard drive backup done and I have all my excel and word documents on the new laptop but I cannot open them. It keeps telling me that I need the product key but I do not have it saved anywhere. I have tried the on line support for over 3 hours and can't get anywhere. I need assistance but there is NO PHONE NUMBER to call to speak to a live person.

Hi Jim, re "I have a 'Microsoft 365 account that i opened in 2022" If you mean that you have a Microsoft 365 Personal/Family subscription you need to sign into Services & Subscriptions on your ne computer where you can reinstall your Microsoft Personal/Family>Sign in here: https://account.microsoft.com/servicesBIG problem is that installing your Microsoft Personal/Family may clash/will clash with the files and folders that you have saved to your new computer.

You can contact Microsoft Support here: https://support.microsoft.com/contactus/ (You Get help and at bottom of page>Contact Support

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Did you originally buy Microsoft 365 as a subscription (yearly/monthly), or was it a one-time purchase like Office 2024?
    2. Are you signed in to Word/Excel with the same Microsoft account you used back in 2022?

For Microsoft 365 subscriptions, you normally do not need a product key again. You just need to sign in. If you haven't tried anything yet:

    • Make sure you're signed in with the same Microsoft account that the subscription is linked to.
    • Then, open any Office app (like Word or Excel), go to File > Account, and click "Update License" to refresh your subscription status.

    If issue still persists:

Before installing, it’s a good idea to uninstall all existing versions of Office to avoid conflicts.

    Here’s how:

    • Open the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Look for any version of Microsoft Office or Office apps, right-click, then choose Uninstall. Please uninstall all Office apps.
    • Once that’s done, restart your computer just to be safe.

    Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
    • Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to your license.
    • Find your Microsoft 365 Subscription and click the "Install".
    • That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

If anything’s unclear or the "Install" option still doesn’t show, feel free to let me know. I’ll be happy to walk you through it!

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

The documents are asking for a product key because Office on the new laptop is not activated. For a Microsoft 365 subscription opened in 2022, the subscription is normally tied to a Microsoft account, not to a product key that must be re‑entered every time.

    Use these steps:

    1. Confirm the subscription is still active
    2. Install Microsoft 365 on the new laptop
      • Install Microsoft 365 on the new device using the same Microsoft account that was used in 2022. The official install steps are in “Download, install, or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on a PC or Mac” (see the Q&A reference in the context). Once installed, open Word or Excel and sign in with that Microsoft account so the apps activate.
    3. If a product key really is required
      • If the original purchase was a physical card/box or a one‑time purchase (non‑subscription Office), the key may need to be entered once to start or renew the subscription. The article “A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application” explains that even if payment was made, the subscription does not start until the product key from the box/card or email receipt is redeemed.
      • If the key cannot be found, use the “Finding product keys for Windows and Office” links in the Microsoft account sign‑in helper or account sign‑in support pages to review how keys are retrieved or managed.
    4. If the apps still show subscription or unlicensed errors
      • Follow the guidance in “A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application” to check renewal status and resolve unlicensed/subscription prompts. If the expiration date or status is wrong, contact support as described below.
    5. Contact Microsoft support and speak with an agent
      • For Microsoft 365 Family or Personal, use the official support channels:
        • Go to the Microsoft 365 support/contact page and choose Chat or Call back to have a support expert call back. This is described in:
          • “Microsoft 365 Customer Service and Support” (home products section)
          • “Contact Microsoft Office Support” (Microsoft 365 for home section)
        • Alternatively, use the Get Help app on Windows: search for “Get Help”, open it, type the issue (for example, “cannot activate Microsoft 365, need product key”), then choose Contact support and select Chat with a support agent or Call me back. The Q&A references in the context describe these steps as the way to reach a live person.

Once Microsoft 365 is properly installed and activated with the correct Microsoft account (or product key if applicable), Word and Excel on the new laptop will open the backed‑up documents normally.
