Follow these steps in order on the Dell Inspiron:
- Check the output device and basic connections
- Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
- Select the arrow to the right of the volume slider and make sure the preferred speakers/headphones are selected as the output device.
- If using external speakers/headphones, verify cables are fully plugged in, in the correct jack (usually green or labeled “headphone”), and that their own volume controls are turned up and not muted.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
- Open the Get Help app and run the audio troubleshooter using the “Troubleshoot audio issues” option. It will automatically diagnose and attempt to fix common sound problems.
- Try different audio formats (can fix distortion/mushy sound)
- In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel and open it.
- Go to Hardware and Sound > Sound.
- On the Playback tab, right‑click the Default Device (the speakers/headphones in use) and select Properties.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Under Default Format, choose a different format (for example, try a lower sample rate/bit depth), select OK, then test audio. If still mushy or buzzy, repeat with another format.
- Update or reinstall the audio driver
- In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager and open it.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right‑click the Dell/Realtek audio device and select Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts.
- If the issue persists, in Device Manager right‑click the same audio device, select Uninstall device, check Delete the driver software for this device if available, and select Uninstall.
- Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the audio driver automatically.
- If still distorted, in Device Manager right‑click the audio device again, choose Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, select High Definition Audio Device, then Next and follow prompts. Test the sound again.
- Check for and apply Windows Updates
- Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install any available updates, restart, and test audio.
If audio remains buzzy/mushy after these steps, test with a different set of speakers/headphones. If the distortion is present on all devices, contact Dell support, as the built‑in audio hardware on the new PC may be faulty.
