Clearing out your OneDrive storage instead of purchasing more storage involves turning off the backup in the Manage Backup settings and returning your files, which had been synced to OneDrive, back to their default folders (on your PC only) in File Explorer.

Deleting OneDrive files should not be done until the folder backup is turned off and your files returned to their default folders in File Explorer. If you leave the folder backup on, your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders will once again be repopulated in OneDrive.

Back up your folders with OneDrive

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

After freeing space (or purchasing additional storage), it can take up to 24 to 48 hours for everything to fully update across your account. I’d recommend waiting that time and check again OneDrive after that.

If the update is still pending after 24 hours, you can try unlinking and relinking your OneDrive account, or resetting it. "Unlink and re-link OneDrive" https://support.microsoft.com/office/unlink-and-re-link-onedrive-3c4680bf-cc36-4204-9ca5-e7b24cdd23ea

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

I was told that after I went through the process that I was instructed to go through if I had a problem to reach back out to Microsoft and give them my number that they gave me they will call me to access my computer back to fix the problem

Remote access can’t be provided, but the storage status can be checked and corrected with a few steps.

    1. Confirm why OneDrive shows as full
      • OneDrive can be full because:
        • The storage quota for the account has been exceeded.
        • A shared folder added to OneDrive is consuming space.
        • Outlook.com mailbox or OneDrive storage is full and counts toward the overall Microsoft storage.
        • A Microsoft 365 subscription, promotion, or bonus storage (such as Samsung bonus) has expired, reducing the quota.
      • See the reasons listed under Why is my OneDrive full? and verify which applies to the account.
    2. Check what is using the storage
      • Sign in to OneDrive on the web.
      • Use Manage your OneDrive storage or the Storage used link to see:
        • Total storage and used storage.
        • Largest files.
        • Items in the OneDrive Recycle Bin (these still count against the quota).
    3. Make sure the Recycle Bin is emptied
      • In OneDrive on the web, open the Recycle Bin.
      • Delete items permanently or select Empty your recycle bin.
      • This is required to actually free space after deleting files.
    4. Remove shared folders that push the account over quota
      • If someone shared a large folder and it was added to OneDrive, it can make the storage appear full.
      • Follow the steps in How to remove shared folders from your OneDrive to remove those shared folders from the own OneDrive so they no longer count against the quota.
    5. Verify subscription and storage changes
      • Check the Microsoft account services page to confirm:
        • Any Microsoft 365 subscription is active and not expired.
        • Any promotional or bonus storage (for example, 100 GB Samsung bonus) has not expired.
      • If a subscription or promotion ended, the quota may have dropped below the amount of data stored, so OneDrive will still show as full even after some cleanup.
    6. If storage was purchased or adjusted by support
      • After buying additional OneDrive storage or after a support agent adjusts storage, it can take up to 24 hours for the new quota to appear.
      • If the quota still has not updated after 48 hours, contact support again using the Contact Support options in the OneDrive help pages.
    7. Options to get back under quota
      • If, after all checks, usage is still above the quota:
        • Delete more files and then empty the Recycle Bin.
        • Or purchase additional storage or a plan upgrade under Upgrades in the OneDrive storage page.
    8. What happens while over quota
      • When over the storage limit:
        • New files cannot be uploaded, edited, or synced.
        • Existing files remain but are read-only.
      • If the account stays over quota for 6 months, OneDrive files may be deleted and become non-recoverable.

If the storage view and quota still look incorrect after these steps and more than 48 hours have passed since the Microsoft agent “cleared” the storage or changed the quota, use the Contact Microsoft Support or Account & Billing Help links in the OneDrive support articles to open a new support request and reference the previous case.
