Detach the Type Cover. Inspect the magnetic connector pins on:

    The Surface

    The keyboard

Look for: Dust, Bent pins, Corrosion

    Clean gently with:

    Dry microfiber cloth

OR cotton bud with very little isopropyl alcohol

    Then reattach firmly.

    Shut down completely.

Press and hold Power button for 20 seconds.

    Release.

    Wait 10 seconds.

    Start normally.

Download the official driver package for:

    Surface Pro 8

    Shut down

    Hold Volume Up

    Press Power

Release Power but keep holding Volume Up

    You’ll enter BIOS/UEFI.

    Now check:

    Does the keyboard work there?

If it works, then → Windows driver issue.

If it doesn't then most likely hardware failure

Follow these steps in order to narrow down whether this is a software or hardware issue with the Type Cover:

    1. Check for debris and reattach the Type Cover
      • Unplug Surface Pro 8 and detach the Type Cover.
      • Make sure there is no debris or damage on the connector (both on the Type Cover spine and the bottom edge of the Surface).
      • Re‑attach the Type Cover, ensuring all magnets fully connect to the bottom edge of the Surface.
    2. Force restart the Surface Pro 8
      • Select Start > Power > Shut down and wait until it is completely off.
      • Press and hold the Power button for 20 seconds. If the logo appears, keep holding until it disappears and reappears, then release.
      • After restart, check if the Type Cover is detected and if the Caps and Fn LEDs work.
    3. Confirm functionality in UEFI (to separate hardware vs Windows issue)
Since the Caps and Fn lights are not working, first check if the keyboard works outside Windows:
      1. Turn off the Surface and wait 10 seconds.
      2. Press and hold Volume Up, then press and release Power while still holding Volume Up.
      3. When the logo appears, keep holding Volume Up until the UEFI screen opens.
      4. In UEFI, try the arrow keys on the Type Cover to move through the left‑side menu.
        • If the keys do not work in UEFI and the LEDs stay off, this strongly indicates a hardware problem with the Type Cover or its connector. Skip to step 6.
        • If the keys work in UEFI but not in Windows, the issue is likely software/Windows. Continue with step 4.
    4. Check updates and drivers
      • Open the Surface app (install it from Microsoft Store if needed).
      • Go to Help & support and select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install all available updates.
      • For Surface Pro 8, recent updates include Surface Type Cover firmware (for example, “Surface Type Cover v7 Firmware Update – Extensions”) that fix issues where keypresses and the touchpad do not function correctly when connected. Make sure all such updates are installed and restart.
    5. If the keyboard works in UEFI but not in Windows: reset Windows (keep files)
If the Type Cover works fine in UEFI but still not in Windows after updates, reinstall Windows while keeping personal files:
      1. Go to Start, type reset, and select Reset this PC.
      2. Choose Reset this PC > Keep my files > Cloud download and follow the prompts.
This reinstalls Windows, removes installed apps/drivers and settings changes, but keeps personal files and the apps that came with the PC.
    6. If the Type Cover does not work in UEFI or LEDs never light: service the hardware
If the Caps/Fn LEDs never turn on and the keys do not work even in UEFI after cleaning and reattaching, the Type Cover is likely experiencing a hardware failure.
      • Go to Microsoft account | Select device for service and create a service order for the Surface Pro Keyboard/Type Cover.
      • If the warranty has expired, consider purchasing a new Surface Pro Keyboard/Type Cover from Microsoft Store or authorized retailers.

If the Type Cover has visible damage (cracked keys, keys fallen off) or continues to drop/repeat keys after cleaning, treat it as hardware failure and proceed with a service order as well.
