I have no idea what happened. I used to be able to go to YouTube, watch videos and be able to hear the sound through my laptop speakers. But now I hear nothing. The sound bar thing, to increase and decrease the sound, lower right side sound icon, when I tap it, I see the slider but it's not bold, it's grey out of not able toto use, not enabled. When I use the Get Help app, I doesn't ask me the right question or allow me to ask my specific question. My question would be something like, please help me get sound to come out of my laptop speakers, where are my laptop speakers, why do I have to always connect an audio device to hear sound from my laptop? Those would be my questions. Get Help continues to only ask me to connect an audio device before it can assist me. when I do that, it does continue to check my sound capability through that connected device and yes That works, I heard the sound through that audio device but that's not what I'm interested in, I know that work. I would really like to learn what may have happened and some suggestions to fix my specific problem. Any savvy outstanding techs out there who already know the possible answer to my issue and so confident that you are so sure you can narrow it down to a few suggestions and for sure fix, I'd be so delighted to learn from you. Thanks Tech guys and gals, your help is always invaluable. I hope I'm using that correctly. I am trying to say, your help, service and technical savvy abilities are very valuable, priceless

The laptop speakers are likely disabled, missing a driver, or not selected as the default output device. Use these steps in order on Windows 10 or 11.

    1. Check that Windows sees any audio device
    • Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
    • If you see an arrow next to the volume slider, select it and look for an output called something like Speakers / Realtek / High Definition Audio.
    • If only external devices show (USB headset, monitor, etc.) and no internal speakers, the built‑in device may be disabled or its driver missing.
    1. Make sure the device and volume are not muted/disabled
    • Right‑click the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
    • Open the Volume mixer (Windows 10) or More mixer settings (Windows 11).
    • Ensure the main device and apps are not muted and volume is up. In Windows 11, an “x” next to a slider means muted; select it or move the slider to unmute.
    • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • In Output, select the internal speakers device if it appears.
      • Open Device properties (Windows 10) or More sound settingsPlayback tab (Windows 11).
      • Make sure the device is enabled (Windows 11: Device usage = Use this device (enable); Windows 10: Disable checkbox is cleared).
    1. Set the laptop speakers as the default device (Windows 10) If Windows is sending sound to the wrong device:
    2. In the search box, type control panel and open it.
    3. Select Hardware and Sound > Sound.
    4. On the Playback tab, right‑click the internal speakers (or Speakers / High Definition Audio Device) and select Set as Default Device, then OK.
    5. Check physical connections and basic controls Even for built‑in speakers:
    • Make sure no headphones are plugged in; many laptops mute speakers when a jack is in use.
    • If using any USB audio dongle, unplug it and test again.
    • Confirm the keyboard volume keys haven’t muted sound (try pressing the volume‑up key several times).
    1. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter (for the internal device)
    • Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > under Audio, select Run.
    • Windows 10: Use the Playing Audio troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Let it detect and attempt to fix configuration issues.
    1. Reinstall or update the audio driver If the speakers still don’t appear or are grayed out, the driver may be missing or corrupted.

    Update automatically:

    1. In the taskbar search, type device manager and open it.
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right‑click the audio device (for example, Realtek, Intel SST, or High Definition Audio Device) and select Update driver.
      • Windows 11: Search automatically for drivers.
      • Windows 10: Search automatically for updated driver software.
    4. Follow the prompts.

If that doesn’t help, uninstall and let Windows reinstall:

    1. In Device Manager, under Sound, video and game controllers, right‑click the audio device.
    2. Select Uninstall device.
      • Windows 11: check Attempt to remove the driver for this device if available.
      • Windows 10: check Delete the driver software for this device.
    3. Select Uninstall.
    4. Restart the PC (Start > Power > Restart). Windows will reinstall a driver automatically.

If problems persist, try the generic Windows driver:

    1. In Device Manager, right‑click the audio device > Update driver.
    2. Choose Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
    3. Select High Definition Audio Device and finish the wizard.
    4. If no audio device is installed at all If the volume icon says No audio device is installed and Device Manager shows no sound device:
    • Install the correct audio driver from the laptop manufacturer’s support site for the exact model.
    • After installing, restart and repeat steps 2–3 to ensure the device is enabled and set as default.
    1. When to suspect hardware If:
    • Internal speakers never appear in Sound / Playback devices, even after reinstalling drivers, and
    • External devices work fine, then the internal audio hardware or speaker connection may be faulty. In that case, contact the laptop manufacturer’s support for hardware diagnostics.
