Hi microsoft, i was doing well using msteams until may phone broke. Right now i can't fix it yet but i need to use my msteams ASAP for my studies. Now the problem is i can't open it in my other device because it's only accepting authentecation from my broken phone, and even if i try to download an ms authenticator in my other device it still needs authentication from my broken device. pls help me fix it as early as possible.

idk if its okay to put my MS student account here but i think its the app that has a problem not the account. thank you

    Hey there, Zechariah Tanaka

If this is happened, please can you reach out to your IT team at university. They can reset your authentication method if you have another phone you can use to install the Microsoft Authenticator app on.

Alternatively, they can also provide you with a temparary access code you can use to sign in and authenticate with. This is what it looks like

They just need to pull the activation duration to the max which is 43200 minutes which is 30 days.

    Hope this helps,
    Nathan

To regain access to Microsoft Teams when the Microsoft Authenticator app is tied to a broken phone, the sign-in method must be changed or MFA reset by an administrator or support. The app itself is not the issue; the account’s multifactor authentication (MFA) configuration is.

Use the following options depending on the type of account:

    1. Try alternative sign-in methods (if configured)
    • On the Teams sign-in screen (or Microsoft 365 sign-in), after entering username and password, look for an option like “Sign in another way”.
    • If an alternative method (SMS, call, email, office phone, etc.) was set up earlier, select it and complete verification.
    • After signing in, update MFA methods (add the new phone / Authenticator) so Teams can work normally.

If no alternative method is available, the account’s admin must reset MFA.

    1. If this is a school (education) account and you are a student (end user)
    • Contact the school’s IT help desk or Microsoft 365/Entra administrator and explain that the phone with Authenticator is broken and you cannot complete MFA.
    • Ask them to reset your MFA settings in Microsoft Entra so you can re-register the Microsoft Authenticator app on the new device.
    • After the reset, sign in again; you will be prompted to set up MFA (scan QR code with the new Authenticator app) and then Teams will work.
    1. If you are the only admin on the tenant (for example, if this is a small organization where the student account is also the only global admin)
    • A normal MFA reset cannot be done by another admin, so Microsoft’s Data Protection team must help.
    • Call Microsoft using the Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support entry in the context and request a Data Protection / tenant admin MFA reset. Clearly state:
      • This is a Microsoft 365 for business/education tenant.
      • You are the only global administrator.
      • You are locked out because the phone with Microsoft Authenticator is broken.
    • Follow their identity verification steps so they can restore access.
    1. General Teams sign-in behavior
    • When access is challenged, Teams shows a banner asking to Sign in again. Until sign-in (including MFA) is completed, Teams will block new chats, calls, and meetings.
    • After MFA is successfully completed on the new device, Teams should resume normal operation.

If none of the above is possible, only the organization’s IT admin or Microsoft support (via the Data Protection process) can restore access; this cannot be fixed from the client app alone.
