Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand you want to locate and copy your current desktop background image on Windows 11, but you cannot find the original picture file in your folders or open it directly from the desktop.
Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following.
Before we proceed, to help narrow this down a bit:
- Is your current background set as Picture, Slideshow, or Windows Spotlight?
- Did you originally set this wallpaper from a local file, or was it provided automatically by Windows?
In the meantime, you can try these steps:
1, Open Settings and go to Personalization, then select Background.
- Check which background type is currently selected.
- If Picture is selected, note the image preview shown there.
2, Scroll down in the Background settings and select Browse under Choose your picture.
- This may reveal the folder location where the image was originally stored.
3, Open File Explorer and navigate to this folder if it appears.
- Right-click the image file and select Copy.
- Paste it into another folder such as Pictures or Desktop.
4, If the background is set to Slideshow or Windows Spotlight, create a copy using a screen capture.
- Show the desktop so the wallpaper is fully visible.
- Press the Print Screen key.
- Open Paint, paste the image, crop to the wallpaper area, and save it to a folder you choose.
5, If you see the same image inside another app such as Photos or a browser:
- Use that app’s Save as or Copy option to store a local copy.
6, After saving the image to a known folder, you can reuse it by going back to Background settings and selecting Picture, then Browse to the saved file.
