I have 2 additional monitors in addition to the laptop monitor. Other 2 monitors are connected via an hp docking station. All three monitors are connected and operating, but they are mirroring and computer is only recognizing 2 monitors (not 3)

    Hi,

That's because it might be 1:2 and 3. If it's in that order, select it and click "extend" in settings > Display.

Click "identify" and see if it recognizes numbers on all 3 monitors.

What is the model of the laptop and the Docker?

    Thanks

Configure the system to use three independent displays and verify that the hardware actually supports three outputs.

    1. First, confirm Windows is set to extend, not duplicate:
      • Press Windows logo key + P.
      • Choose Extend (not Duplicate or PC screen only / Second screen only). This allows different content on each screen.
    2. Rearrange and confirm how many displays Windows sees:
      • In Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Display.
      • In Windows 10: Start > Settings > System > Display.
      • In the diagram at the top, select Identify. Windows will show numbers on each detected screen.
      • If only two numbers appear, Windows is only seeing two displays; one of the physical monitors is mirroring because the dock/GPU is sending the same signal to both.
    3. Check for a third display and try to detect it:
      • In Display settings, go to Multiple displays.
      • Select Detect to see if Windows can find another monitor.
      • If the third monitor still does not appear as a separate display, the limitation is likely hardware.
    4. Understand common hardware limits:
      • Many laptops and docks only support two active displays total (for example, laptop panel + 1 external, or 2 externals with the laptop screen disabled). When a third physical monitor is attached, it often just mirrors one of the others.
      • Some graphics adapters and docks cannot drive three independent outputs; they duplicate the same signal to two ports.
      • If using a splitter, note that splitters typically duplicate a signal, not create an additional independent display.
    5. Work within the hardware limit or change hardware:
      • If the GPU/dock only supports two displays, choose which two to use as extended:
        • In Display settings, select one display and choose Disconnect this display (or turn off the laptop’s internal screen) so the two external monitors can be the extended desktop.
      • To truly use three independent displays, use hardware that explicitly supports three monitors:
        • A dock that supports three external displays with the specific laptop model.
        • Or a USB/USB‑C display adapter that adds another video output, if supported by the system.
    6. If it previously worked and stopped after updates:
      • Make sure Windows and device firmware/drivers are up to date.
      • If the USB‑C/Thunderbolt video path is involved, check BIOS/UEFI settings to ensure Thunderbolt/DisplayPort over USB‑C is enabled (similar to the BIOS change described in the context for enabling Thunderbolt and DisplayPort resolution).

If, after these steps, Windows still only ever shows two displays in Settings > System > Display, the environment is almost certainly limited by the laptop GPU or the HP dock to two active displays at a time.
