    Hi W Jeffrey Tippett,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

Based on your description and screenshots, Outlook is either:

    1. still using old saved credentials, or
    2. the account now requires Yahoo sign-in / app password, or
    3. Outlook is configured with non-Yahoo server settings for a mailbox that’s actually being handled by Yahoo.

Steps to try (Classic Outlook for Windows)

    1) Trigger the modern Yahoo sign-in (Pro tip)

Sometimes Repair prompts the newer Yahoo sign-in window (instead of just a basic password box):

    • Outlook > File > Account Settings > Account Settings
    • Select the Cox/Yahoo IMAP account
    • Click Repair (or Change > then Next to test)

Expected result: You get a Yahoo login prompt and the account reauthenticates.

    2) Clear saved credentials (forces a clean login)

    • Close Outlook
    • Windows Credential Manager > Windows Credentials
    • Remove entries related to Outlook/Office/Yahoo/IMAP/Cox
    • Reopen Outlook and try Send/Receive

Expected result: Outlook asks again and accepts the correct sign-in.

    3) Verify you’re using Yahoo IMAP/SMTP settings (even if the address is @cox.net)

In Account Settings > Change > More Settings (or Server Settings), confirm:

    • Incoming (IMAP): imap.mail.yahoo.com — Port 993 — SSL/TLS
    • Outgoing (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.com — Port 465 (SSL) or 587 (STARTTLS)
    • Username: your full email address (******@cox.net)

Expected result: Outlook connects to the right server for Yahoo-hosted mailboxes.

    4) If 2-step verification is enabled: use an App Password

If your Yahoo security settings have 2-step verification on, Outlook often needs a Yahoo App Password instead of your regular password.

    Quick checks

    1. Can you sign in to your mailbox in a web browser successfully?
    2. Is this mailbox managed via Yahoo Mail sign-in (Yahoo-hosted Cox)?
    3. After trying Repair, do you get a Yahoo sign-in popup or does it just fail immediately?

Please let me know if this proves useful to you, or if you would like further assistance.

I'm looking forward to your reply.

Because the Yahoo password was changed with the email provider, the stored password in classic Outlook must be updated so it can sign in and sync again.

Follow these steps in classic Outlook for Windows:

    1. First confirm the new password works
      • Sign in to Yahoo Mail on the web and make sure the new password is correct.
    2. Update the password in Outlook
      • Close Outlook.
      • Open Control Panel in Windows.
      • Select Mail.
      • Select Email Accounts....
      • On the Email tab, select the Yahoo account and choose Change (or Repair, depending on version).
      • When prompted for the account password, enter the new Yahoo password.
      • Complete the wizard and finish.
      • Reopen Outlook and let it connect; sending/receiving should now work.

If Outlook keeps prompting for a password after this, it usually means the password in Outlook does not match what was set at Yahoo, or the password has expired again. In that case, verify the password with Yahoo first, then repeat the update steps in Outlook.

If using IMAP and Outlook never prompts for a password during setup or repair, ensure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked on the IMAP settings page, then try again.
