Want to disable this banner. Our office uses a server for all file storage so this is not a feature I want or need.

    Dear @Andrew Franklin,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum!

I’ve reviewed the “Back up this document” banner you’re seeing in Word/Excel. This behavior is expected in Microsoft 365 Apps and is part of Microsoft’s design to encourage OneDrive backup for documents that are opened from local disks or file servers.

Before looking at more advanced or IT-managed options, I recommend trying the steps below first, as these may reduce or stop the banner for many users:

    • Open any Office app (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint).
    • Go to File > Options > Save.
    • Set Default local file location (This PC).
    • Turn off AutoSave files stored in the cloud by default.
    • Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Message Bar, and select "Never show information about blocked content"

If the banner still appears after trying the above, this article provides additional options (including registry and policy-based approaches typically used in business environments):

Please note that Microsoft does not currently provide a single supported switch to completely disable this banner in all scenarios, but the methods above may minimize or suppress it effectively.
