OneDrive Personal Vault itself cannot be deleted as a feature; it is part of OneDrive Personal and is tied to the Microsoft account. However, it can be left empty, locked, and unused so it no longer affects files or sync.
To stop using Personal Vault and clear it:
- Unlock Personal Vault:
- In OneDrive, select the Personal Vault folder.
- Complete the identity verification (text, email code, Microsoft Authenticator, PIN, fingerprint, or face) as prompted.
- Remove its contents:
- Move any files you still need out of Personal Vault into a regular OneDrive folder, or download them and store them locally.
- Delete all remaining files inside Personal Vault.
- Keep it locked going forward:
- Close any files that were stored in Personal Vault so sync can complete.
- Wait for OneDrive sync to finish.
- Lock Personal Vault manually by selecting the Personal Vault folder and then Lock.
- Optionally, reduce interaction with it by ignoring the folder and not storing new files there.
If an error icon on the OneDrive app is related to Personal Vault being “not up to date,” clearing and syncing it once usually resolves the warning:
- Unlock Personal Vault.
- Close any open files stored in Personal Vault.
- Wait until the sync icon disappears and sync completes.
- Lock Personal Vault again.
After this, Personal Vault can remain empty and locked; it does not need to be deleted.
