Can I rename my OneDrive folder, which apparently I mislabled?

Hello helpful people.

I wanted to transfer System folders out of OneDrive, but only did it successfully with my Desktop folder. And I think I renamed the folder with the OneDrive icon "Desktop", but the OneDrive folder still shows in Registry Editor. D drive screen shot Mar '26

My questions are; Could I safely rename the folder with the OneDrive icon "OneDrive"?
And: could I safely move my System folder "Desktop" back into that OneDrive folder?

Should OneDrive be delinked for these operations?

If someone could give an interpretation of what the Registry Editor shows, that would be great too.

Your registry indicates you have moved your OneDrive folder to the D drive, you should be able to safely rename the OneDrive folder on the D drive to OneDrive.

Your registry also indicates you should be then able to drag the Desktop folder into the OneDrive folder, then change that entry in the registry.

The other problem I see is your Videos folder has become merged to the D drive, you need to create a new folder named Videos on your D drive, then change that entry in the registry. 2026-03-02_093432

Thank you Dave, very much for those answers. Yes, I renamed the OneDrive folder to its correct name, and there has been to no interruption to the system.

Recently, I thought I moved Desktop out OneDrive using Properties>Location, into a new folder I created called "My Folders" in D drive, which can be seen in Registry, but I don't see in File Explorer, unless I search for it, and it has the Desktop icon. It appears to have my Desktop files and isn't currently synced to OneDrive.

Should I try to rename that blue folder Desktop, and relocate it to the OneDrive folder using the same way to moved it out? I wonder if changing the Registry would be better done by Microsoft Customer Service?

You also correctly observed I inadvertently merged my Videos folder with D:\ drive. I made a separate folder for storing videos and gave it the same name, and hadn't been syncing the System folder named Videos. I'll deal with it after solving the previous question, if that is advisable.

Right click the Desktop folder and select Properties.

On the resulting Properties dialog, select the Location tab.

Choose to reset the Desktop folder to its default location.

Wait for that process to complete.

Then go to the Location tab again and set its location to your preferred location for the Desktop folder, please ensure you specify a specific folder location, not just a drive.
