This has been such a problem, no body else is allowed in the document, without clearing that no one else is in the document. With only me in the document, I open and makes changes to the Excell spreadsheet. I save it and close it. If I reopen it, it shows a conflict page, every time.

    Hi @Alan W Richards

Thank you for taking the time to post your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I’m sorry you’re running into this repeated conflict issue with your embedded Excel file, and I’ll be happy to help you look into it further.

I’d also appreciate it if you could explain a bit more about how the Excel file was added to your notebook. Is it a local file that you attached manually, or did you insert it using the Insert > Spreadsheet option, which embeds the sheet directly into the page? The way the file was added can influence how OneNote handles it behind the scenes.

While we’re checking those details, there’s a small test you might try on your end. If the Excel file was originally added using Insert > Spreadsheet, please upload that file to OneDrive; and if it’s already stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, simply copy its link. You can then paste that link into your OneNote page, either directly or through Insert > Link, whichever you prefer.

After replacing the embedded spreadsheet with the link, go ahead and sync your notebook to make sure everything updates properly. You can force a full sync by going to File > View Sync Status > Sync All.

Once the sync completes, try opening and editing the Excel file again to see if the conflict issue still appears. This will help us understand whether the problem is tied to the embedded object itself or to the syncing process.

If you have any updates, please feel free to leave a comment under this post. I truly hope to hear back from you so we can continue investigating this together.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

The conflict page appears because OneNote detects synchronization/merge conflicts when the embedded Excel file is changed and the updated version does not match what is already stored in the notebook. This can happen even if no one else is actively in the notebook, for example if:

    • The same page or embedded file was edited on another device earlier and not fully synced.
    • OneNote or the network briefly lost connection while saving, so OneNote created a conflict copy to avoid data loss.

To handle and reduce these conflicts:

    1. When a conflict page appears
      • Select the yellow Information bar at the top of the page to open the page that lists conflicting changes (highlighted in red).
      • Compare the conflict page with the main page.
      • Copy any needed content from the conflict page and paste it into the main page.
      • When finished, delete the conflict page (right‑click its page tab and select Delete, or use Delete Version on the yellow bar, depending on the OneNote client).
    2. Make sure only one version is being edited
      • Confirm the notebook is not open on another device or in another OneNote client (for example, OneNote for the web and desktop at the same time) where the same page or embedded Excel file might be cached and saving.
    3. Check sync status
      • After editing and saving the Excel file from within OneNote, wait a moment for OneNote to sync before closing the notebook or the app.
      • If sync errors appear (for example, “Server is busy”), sign out and sign back in to OneNote, or close and reopen the notebook, then let it fully sync before editing again.
    4. If conflicts keep recurring on the same page
      • Create a new page in the same section.
      • Copy the current, correct content (including the embedded Excel file) from the main page into the new page.
      • Let the notebook fully sync, then delete the old page that repeatedly shows conflicts.

These steps ensure that OneNote has a single, clean version of the page and embedded Excel file, which reduces the chance of OneNote generating a conflict page every time the spreadsheet is edited.
