To install Windows 11 on a new SSD when Windows 10 is currently on an old SSD, use one of these supported methods:
- Prepare and check the PC
- Make sure the PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 using the PC Health Check app.
- Back up important files from the old SSD to external storage or cloud.
- Recommended: Upgrade path (if you want to keep apps and data) If the plan is to upgrade the existing Windows 10 first, then move to the new SSD:
- On the old SSD (Windows 10), check for the Windows 11 upgrade:
- Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If Windows 11 is offered, select Download and install, then follow the prompts until the upgrade completes.
- After Windows 11 is installed and working, clone or image this disk to the new SSD using a disk-cloning tool (not covered in the context) and then boot from the new SSD.
- Clean install Windows 11 directly on the new SSD (fresh install) If a fresh install is preferred on the new SSD:
A. Create Windows 11 installation media
- On any working Windows PC, go to Create installation media for Windows and follow the steps to create a Windows 11 installation media (USB flash drive).
B. Install Windows 11 on the new SSD
- Power off the PC and install the new SSD (leave the old SSD disconnected if possible to avoid confusion during install).
- Insert the Windows 11 USB installation media.
- Turn on the PC and open the boot menu (usually F1–F12 or DEL, depending on the manufacturer).
- From the boot menu, select the USB drive that contains the Windows 11 installation media.
- Follow the Windows 11 Setup wizard:
- Choose language, time, and keyboard.
- Select Install now.
- When asked where to install Windows, select the new SSD, delete any existing partitions on it if needed, and let Setup create new partitions.
- Continue through the setup until Windows 11 finishes installing. The PC will restart several times.
- After installation, sign in, reinstall apps, and copy back files from your backup.
- Alternative: Use Windows 11 Installation Assistant (upgrade on old SSD first) If Windows Update does not offer Windows 11 but the PC is compatible:
- Download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
- Run it on the current Windows 10 system.
- If it shows Install Windows 11, select Accept and install and follow the prompts until the upgrade completes.
- After the upgrade, move or clone the installation to the new SSD using a disk-cloning tool.
For most home users who want a clean setup on the new SSD, the clean install with USB installation media is the simplest and most reliable method.
