It would be helpful for troubleshooting if you can post some screenshots of the changed formatting and show or describe how if differs from the original formatting.

Also check whether a theme (on the Design ribbon) has been applied or removed; whether the Normal.dotm template (or the template on which the document is based, if not Normal.dotm) has been changed; and whether any style definitions appear to be modified. Each of these things can radically change the appearance of a document.

If the formatting of a Word document has changed, recovery options depend on how and where the file was saved and whether versioning/AutoRecover was available.

    1. Check for an earlier version of the file (local or OneDrive/SharePoint)
      • Open the affected document in Word.
      • Select File > Info.
      • Under Manage Documents, look for a version labeled (when I closed without saving) or other earlier versions.
      • Open the version and, if it has the correct formatting, select Restore to overwrite the current file, or Compare to review differences.
    2. Recover an unsaved or auto-recovered version
      • In Word, go to File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents.
      • Browse the list of unsaved files, open candidates, and check if any contain the original formatting.
      • If you find the correct one, use Save As to save it under a new name.
    3. Use Document Recovery after a crash or unexpected close
      • If Word or Windows closed unexpectedly, reopen Word.
      • In the Document Recovery pane, open each listed version of the document and check the formatting.
      • Keep and save the version that preserves the original layout; delete unwanted recovered files from the recovery pane.
    4. If the file is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint
      • If the document is in OneDrive or SharePoint, version history may let you restore a previous version with the original formatting from the service (via the library’s Version History or restore features, if enabled).
    5. If formatting changed due to compatibility or file format
      • If the document was saved in an older format such as Word 97–2003 (.doc) or opened in Compatibility Mode, some modern features may be disabled or altered.
      • To prevent further issues, save a corrected version as .docx via File > Save As and choose Word Document (.docx).

If none of the above versions exist (no AutoRecover, no unsaved versions, no version history), Word cannot reconstruct the original formatting; only the currently saved state is available.
