I did not know my husband had a....subscription...to Microsoft. My husband passed away last year. His credit card was just charged a yearly fee. How do I get a refund?

Hi Joyce, I am sorry for your loss. Just to ask, do you have access to your husband’s Microsoft account? To request a refund, sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to the charged card here https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2246882then click Investigate charge, select the transaction, and submit it for review.

Microsoft Billing will review the charge and email you about refund eligibility. If you cannot access the account, contact Microsoft Support from the same page for help closing the account and reviewing the payment. Thanks, and keep safe.

To request a refund and stop future charges on a deceased spouse’s Microsoft 365 (or other Microsoft) subscription, two things are needed: cancel the subscription and then seek a refund through the payment provider if account access is not available.

    1. If account sign-in is possible (you know the Microsoft account and password):
      1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that was used for the subscription.
      2. Find the Microsoft 365 or other subscription and select Manage.
      3. Select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel) and follow the on‑screen steps to complete cancellation.
      4. After cancellation, check refund eligibility as described in How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription. In some countries/regions (for example Canada, Israel, Korea, Turkey, and certain EU countries) a prorated refund may be available when cancelling.
    2. If account sign-in is not possible (no access to the Microsoft account):
      1. For privacy and legal reasons, Microsoft generally cannot provide account details or cancel subscriptions for non‑account holders. When someone has died and the account credentials are not known, Microsoft indicates that subscriptions should be stopped via the bank or card issuer.
      2. Contact the credit card company or bank that issued the card that was charged and:
        • Explain that the account holder is deceased.
        • Ask them to stop any further recurring payments to Microsoft.
        • Request a chargeback or refund for the most recent yearly fee according to their policies.
      3. The Microsoft account itself will eventually close automatically after a period of inactivity, but the bank/card route is the supported way to stop charges when credentials are not available.
    3. If additional help from Microsoft is needed:
