A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Try the following steps on the iPhone to get Microsoft Authenticator working and showing codes again:
- Make sure the phone is online (Wi‑Fi or mobile data) and Airplane mode is off.
- Open the App Store and update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version. Microsoft does not support versions more than 12 months old.
- Open Authenticator and make sure the app is not locked:
- If it asks for Face ID/Touch ID/passcode, complete that so the app can show account details and codes.
- Check notifications and time settings, as they can affect sign‑in and code prompts:
- In iOS Settings → Notifications → Authenticator, turn on Allow Notifications.
- In iOS Settings → General → Date & Time, turn on Set Automatically.
- If you still cannot log in or see any 6‑digit codes when tapping an account, remove and re‑add the account in Authenticator (if you still have another way to sign in, such as SMS or email):
- Sign in to the account in a browser.
- Go to the account’s security/MFA settings and remove the existing Authenticator registration.
- In Authenticator, add the account again using the QR code or setup instructions from the security page.
- If authentication fails with messages like “Authentication did not complete,” check specifically:
- Authenticator is unlocked.
- Notifications are enabled.
- The app is updated and the phone has a working network connection.
If none of these steps work and there is no other verification method (SMS, email, backup codes, or another admin who can reset MFA), contact the appropriate Microsoft support channel or the organization’s IT admin to request an MFA reset or help recovering access.
