My Minecraft Launcher won't work with Java Edition, what do I do?

My Minecraft Launcher keeps saying "Unable to verify what products you own. Please check your internet connection." I've been fully connected to the internet, tried reinstalling the launcher, tried signing in to the launcher again, as well as signing in to the Xbox app and Microsoft Store again and nothing is working. And occasionally Minecraft Launcher WILL load Java Edition, but will say I need to enter a Java username, which doesn't make sense because I had done so years ago. Is there anything else that can be done to fix this?

    Hello Hayden Chiavaras,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Before we proceed, may I know if you have checked the AI assistance suggestion yet? If you did, may I know how it goes?

Additionally, may I know if there are any Microsoft apps that have the same issue or if the issue happens in other games as well?

In the meantime, you can try this quick fix as well.

    • Go to Settings > Time & Language > Date and time.
    • Make sure "Set time automatically" and "Set time zone automatically" is Enabled.
    • Click "Sync now" to synchronize the time.
    • Try to open the game again.

Work through these steps in order, testing the Minecraft Launcher after each step:

    1. Confirm internet and sign-in
    • Make sure Windows is actually online (for example, open a few websites in a browser).
    • Sign out of the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and Minecraft Launcher, then sign back in with the same Microsoft account that owns Minecraft Java Edition.
    1. Update and repair Microsoft Store and apps
    • Reset the Microsoft Store cache:
      1. Press Windows key + R.
      2. Type wsreset.exe and select OK.
      3. Wait for the blank window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
    • In Microsoft Store, go to Library and select Get updates to update Store apps (including the Xbox app and Minecraft Launcher if they appear).
    1. Make sure Windows and Store services are healthy
    • Install all available Windows Updates: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, then restart if required.
    • Check that the Microsoft Store Install Service is running (this affects Store-based apps like the Launcher):
      1. Press Windows key + S, type services.msc, and open it.
      2. Find Microsoft Store Install Service.
      3. If Status is Running, right-click and select Restart.
      4. If it is Disabled or not running, set Startup type to Automatic, select Start, then OK.
    1. Repair or reset Store apps (including Minecraft Launcher)
    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older builds).
    • For Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and Minecraft Launcher:
      • Select the app > Advanced options > first try Repair.
      • If that fails, use Reset (this may clear app data and require sign-in again).
    1. Reinstall Store infrastructure if apps are missing or broken If Store/Xbox apps or Gaming Services appear broken or missing, reinstall them:
    • Reinstall Gaming Services:
      1. Open PowerShell as administrator.
      2. Run:
             get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers
             start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN

      3. In the Store page that opens, install Gaming Services and accept any UAC prompts.
    • Reinstall the Xbox app (if needed):
      1. Ensure the PC is in the RETAIL sandbox so the Xbox app is visible in Microsoft Store.
      2. In PowerShell as administrator, run:
             get-appxpackage Microsoft.XboxApp | remove-AppxPackage -allusers
             start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9mv0b5hzvk9z

      3. Install the Xbox app from the page that opens.
    1. Reinstall Microsoft Store and related apps if nothing else works If Store apps are generally not working or cannot be updated/installed, a deeper reset can help:
    • Ensure the AppX Deployment Service (AppXSvc) is enabled (this service controls Store apps). If it has been modified, restore it to normal (for example, if its Start value was changed in the registry, set it back so the service can run), then:
    • In PowerShell as administrator, remove and reinstall affected Store apps (including WindowsStore, Xbox apps, and Gaming Services) using get-appxpackage and remove-appxpackage, then reinstall them from Microsoft Store.

Once Store, Gaming Services, and Xbox app are healthy, reinstall the Minecraft Launcher from Microsoft Store and sign in again with the correct Microsoft account. This typically resolves “Unable to verify what products you own” and Java username prompts caused by Store/Xbox account or service issues.
