Windows activation is tied to each device’s hardware and to the specific license (digital license or product key), not to the fact that both devices use the same Microsoft account. Using the same Microsoft account on two laptops is supported and is not, by itself, the cause of activation issues.
For each laptop, use the built-in activation tools to resolve the problem:
- On each device, sign in with an administrator account.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- If Windows shows as not activated, select Troubleshoot. The troubleshooter will display a message such as Windows can’t be activated on your device and attempt to fix common activation problems.
- If the device had a digital license linked to the Microsoft account before, select I changed hardware on this device recently when prompted, then:
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account previously associated with that device’s digital license.
- From the list of devices, select the checkbox for This is the device I’m using right now.
- Select Activate.
If the troubleshooter reports that no matching license is found, or the device does not appear in the list under that Microsoft account, then that device does not currently have a transferable digital license associated with it. In that case, activation requires either:
- Entering a valid product key that matches the installed edition (for example, Windows 11 Pro), via Settings > System > Activation > Change product key, or
- Purchasing a new license from the Microsoft Store via Settings > System > Activation > Go to Microsoft Store.
If activation errors such as 0xC004F211 or 0xC004F213 appear (often after hardware changes), use Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot and follow the reactivation path. If the wrong edition was installed (for example, Pro vs Home), the troubleshooter can also detect a valid digital license for a different edition and guide through installing the correct edition.
If activation still fails after running the troubleshooter on each device and confirming the correct edition and license, follow the guidance under Get help with Windows activation errors to match the exact error code and resolution steps.
Using separate Microsoft accounts is optional; it affects sync (for example, OneDrive folders and settings) but not the validity of Windows licenses. To avoid unwanted sync between the two laptops, adjust OneDrive and account sync settings, but handle activation per device as described above.
